skycat 6,174
Don't want to scare you but there is a condition known as primary uterine inertia. When this happens it is a failure to go into labour properly: there are no uterine contractions. Your bitch is in the first stages of labour, which can last as long as 48 hours: panting, bed scratching, general restlessness. The mucous plug generally comes away about 2-3 days before labour begins: any longer with no contractions I'd get the vet to check the bitch over to see if there is foetal distress: they can listen to their hearts with a stethoscope. If she has got uterine inertia (sometimes caused by a very small litter or an over large litter where the uterus is so stretched already it has lost its ability to contract.) then the vet will have to do a caesarean to get the pups out. Keep a close eye on her but don't panic or worry as the bitch may pick up on this. Try and stay calm and let her do what she wants. If she won't settle in the place you want her to, try and let her choose somewhere she feels safe and comfortable, if this is possible. It doesn't matter if she has the first pup or two in the coal shed if that is where she wants to be: you can always move her and the pups to the right place once she's had the first couple. They usually settle fine and have the rest no problem once those first two or three are out and suckling. If it is her first litter she will be very confused as to what is going on; so just be calm and don't fuss over her too much, but monitor her condition. Quote Link to post

Cold Ethyl 63
Bella was producing clear mucas for over a week before she had hers and vets couldnt see anything wrong with her and she went on her own and done a great job considering the size of her and the pups.If she gets upset or really distressed go back to the vet if not keep a close eye.Bella was having contractions for a while before my friend pointed it out and i thought nah and then i looked and sure enough she was subtle as the were. She was straining her back legs and feet and tightening up Quote Link to post
