Just a quick question to those who will no, a friend of mine mine has just got a ex-racing grey hound and was wondering what the tattooed ears were about? Also would he be-able to find out what they mean? I think there is 4 didgets on 1 ear and 3 on the other but not sure? Cheers ant atb

The tattoo's are idenification markings.A race dog would be ear checked against his card before it runs to make sure its the right dog.

Alright mate if you tell your mate to google www. greyhound data.com and go into tattoos, he'll find out all about the dogs background, this is what the tattoos are for, when the dog was bred, whether English or Irish etc. Mick

Greyhound data will only have the earmarks of the dog if someone has registered them on that forum. Your best bet would be to give the Greyhound Stud Book a ring, here's

Although if the dog has earmarks in both ears I'm pretty certain it'll have been registered by the ICC [irish coursing club]. The link below has some usefull contact numbers.
