scalesntails 118
It's much healthier for the dog but takes slightly more effort than scooping dry food out of a bag. You need to supplement the raw meat with some bones unless your meat/mince contains them. I use chicken wings, others use carcass or other things. It depends what you can get. I also feed blended veg twice a week. I personally find the dogs look better have more energy and stamina and there is less poo to clear up. Feeding amount varies between dogs. Genes, age, amount of exercise etc. will all affect the amount you should feed so just start off with a bowl full each day and adjust as you need to. My dogs live in the house so they get fed once a day after my whole family is done eating for the day. The dogs are always fed last as it helps them know their place. Quote Link to post

skycat 6,174
Muscle meat, red meat, the stuff we eat, as in chicken breast, steak, beef mince etc, is high in protein but doesn't contain enough calcium and a whole load of other vitamins and minerals which are necessary for good health. I once knew someone who reared a whole litter to 16 months of age on just ox heart and tongue (cos they were getting it very cheaply) At 16 months of age 3 of the litter broke legs: a blood test revealed that they had virtually no calcium in their bodies: I guess this bloke learned the hard way that a balanced diet is more than some nutritionist's recommendation! Think of feeding a dog the whole animal: so in a rabbit you would get muscle meat, bones, offal (heart, liver, kidneys) Whatever you feed your dog should include a bit of everything you'd find in an animal, it's like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle: you need all of them to complete the picture. Feeding is the same: you need a bit of everything for the dog, or a human, to be completely healthy and be getting enough protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. Quote Link to post
STUNTMAN 552
Feeding raw is great if done in the proper proportions, but it’s just that…getting it right. There’s different flesh you can feed a performance dog all which are necessary, muscle, organ all will benefit a dog. But if you think of it this way when a fox, coyote and wolf eat at a kill they are getting it all. Hair, bone, organ and muscle meat. Plus what ever the herbivore has in its intestinal track which is also very important for a balanced diet. Quote Link to post
STUNTMAN 552
When I raced Greyhounds at the kennel the dogs were feed a mix of muscle and organ with a high quality dry mixed for carbs [energy] in an 80/20 % mixture. Quote Link to post

DogMagic 461
ive been feeding my dogs on meat 4 the last 2 or 3 weeks ive been feeding them all the wastee off of pigs all the cut off the butcher don want theres a lot of fat with it tho is this ok 2 feed your dogs I get my dog grub from the butcher too and the price i pay for it is that i get rid of his crap so i go through every bag i get from him and sort the good stuff from the crap. The good stuff gets bagged up into daily portions and frozen, the crap gets taken away by the bin man. I dont give mine the fat, trotters, pigs heads, pig skin or ears simply because it has no goodness in it. In the winter i do allow them a tiny bit of fat per day but im only talking 1/2 a pound in weight between 5 of them. They get all the offal, flesh and bones and they are thriving on it. seany 54
hi Kaymac88,In my opinion it'll be the single most best thing you can do for for your dog mate. When they eat they enjoy there meal and they really look satisfied and full, with immaculate teeth shiny coat and less waste coming out the back end.I tend to feed 1 Lbs of meat or meaty bones with 1/2 a lbs of veg and maybe some brown bread, rice or pasta a few times a week, this is for a 50lbs dog at 25 inches hope this helps Seany Quote Link to post

scalesntails 118
dog magic why dony u feed the fat dureing the season they need it ... I think he means he doesn't feed the lumps of pure fat. There is probably plenty of fat on the meat he feeds as it is. Quote Link to post

There is probably plenty of fat on the meat he feeds as it is. Thats right. There is enough fat for them amongst what i give them. Also as i said "In the winter i do allow them a tiny bit of fat per day but im only talking 1/2 a pound in weight between 5 of them." This is because they work hard during the winter (season) and also because its that much colder. Fat helps them keep warm and it is energy. I just dont give them to much of it as this would be counterproductive. Also i give them blended veg/fruit, cod liver oil, fish, eggs every now n then as a treat and as an addition to their diet. The veg/fruit is important. The oil, fish and eggs all contain nutrients that will do the dogs good. Quote Link to post
