TWENTY-FIVE greyhounds were rescued when a fire broke out in their kennels.

One animal had to be put down after being trapped in the building and inhaling smoke.

The blaze began in a kitchen area and spread throughout the single-storey building in Warrington Road, Risley, Warrington, at 10am on Friday.

Firefighters think the incident was caused by an electrical fault in a tumble dryer.

When they arrived, the firefighters, from Birchwood and Warrington stations, helped the owner free the dogs before crew members entered, two wearing breathing apparatus, to fight the blaze.

One high-pressure jet was used to extinguish the fire while the gas and electricity was isolated.

After extinguishing the fire, crews damped down to ensure there were no hot-spots.

The ambulance service was called after a woman had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
