trappa 518
Might be showing my ignorance here but does a forum like this cost money or does it make money? Does it cost to have a forum and is it just pennies a month, also is it true that for every click on a forum the owner gets a penny or so? Cheers
Guest jt750
You can have them for free full of all the adverts etc or you can pay. The software can be free or you can pay. you can pay as little or as much as you like to be honest. Its the hosting that costs ..you get a company and pay for their hosting your forum or you can get your own dedicated server and host your own. Ian did tell me that he has his own dedicated server and for a busy forum like this one it costs him upwards of £200 per month.

mattydski 560
I believe this forum is on a dedicated server........That aint cheap..... But I am sure the cost is mitigated as best it can be with pay per click, and donators Wouldnt think it pays the mortgage though.
scalesntails 118
It's not the software its the bandwidth used. I used to run a small reptile forum and that cost me £30 a month so a site this size would easily be £200 a month in server costs and bandwidth.
Guest jt750
the traffic on here needs a dedicated server for it to be secure ,,,and ian pretty much does a good job ..at the end of the day you get what you pay for...
IanB 0
Yes the site is ran on a fully managed dedicated server for this website only as jt750 says. Costs are pretty expensive for the cpu/ram required for over a thousand users online at the same time using server resources, shared, semi, vps hosting wouldn't handle it... Its the resources you need for high usage that drive the cost up, I've removed a couple of misleading posts talking the usual bollocks! Trappa if you need any help or have something in mind pm me
