Ir filter for deben max and mini

Recommended Posts

Gravel, youll never guess what I got the other day? the LED Lenser P7 holster with lens kit... I bought it basically as it came with a red filter, I havent had chance to try it outside yet, but I can comment that it turns the light a bit of apink colour and it will definately reduce its range outside.

After much digging about I found the make and model of the LED used in the Lenser P7 along with its wavelength output.

Basically speaking at 200 lumens of power its light peaks in the visible range of 440nm, however as you get up to the near infra red spectrum where IR on cameras work the output drops to less than 10% or less than 20 lumen.

Basically dont waste your time putting an IR filter on any of the visible light LEDS.

Much better off with this thing that runs on 12v and gives 120m of useable IR light

Thanks for the advice, it was just an idea, but ive seen them lamps on ebay alot cheaper, thanks anyway

O.k lads my mate has a sony handy cam wich is going to be rigged up to a small t.v screen in his 4x4 and the camera and lamp operated by hand out of the sun roof to locate quarry, mainly fox and rabbit, after a quick scan of the internet I can only find pricey deben filters, I have heard of people finding sheets of this stuff to cut filters out of and was wondering if anyone here can point me in the right direction,

Any ideas / alternative suggestions also welcome and if anyone here has bought said sheet of ir filter and has any left over to do either one or both of these lamps im sure I we could sort out a fair deal

Only field trials will tell mate

People don't listen do they.

Putting an IR filter on an LED torch is pi##ing in the wind. The LED torches use CREE (or similar) LED's, which DON'T EMIT Infra Red light. (Ok, they do, a tiny little bit, but effectively nil)

So if you put a filter on, that only passes IR wavelengths, guess what you get?

That's right, NOTHING, ZILCH, ZIP, NADA, RIEN!

If you want IR gel (that's what the thin stuff is called), look for your nearest theatrical supplies place. But don't bother with an IR filter on an LED, it's a waste of time and money (read Markha's posts for the reason why)

If you're going for IR, buy something that is designed to emit IR. You can get IR LED's (indeed I've made several IR LED illuminators for CCTV systems) for a few pennies from Maplin, you just need to find a way of getting a beam (the emitter angle of the small LED's is fairly wide, so unless you focus it you end up wasting a lot of light) and work out the electrics of it all (fairly simple if you have basic electronic knowledge)

I'm assuming you want the IR for NV scopes, or scope cams with zero lux capacity. In which case, check that your emitters work at the correct wavelength for your detector!

I too have been pursuing the Night Vision Option - opting for the affordable route.

Existing Camcorder with Night Vision, adapted to be used with my Deben lamp (i decided to pay the £17 and get the fitted filter from Deben, arrived the day after it was ordered)

But I picked up on info through google which showed the camcorder being fixed to teh scope....so did that too.

The results are good as far as visibility goes, but holding the rifle with the camcorder added to the scope isn't easy (need to lengthen the stock/push the scope forward/practice more with modified set-up)

I've attached a quick video of a rabbit at 70yds with deben on 50% illumnation, looking through my 6X42 scope mounted to my .22RF.

The picture is with extra illumination and rabbits at 100yds.

Blackisler, Im impressed with that very much mate :) I for one would be very interested in seeing some pics of your diy set up as thats pretty damn good :)

Start a new thread in the optics and NV section mate.

Nice pics mate, good to see it working out to those sort of ranges , would only be wanting to spot out there, shots wise the norm for me would be 20-35yds and 50-60 the exeption, are you using a sony handycam?

What method have you used to couple the camera with the scope?

Thanks for your input
