comanche 3,397
Forced to sit quietly at home whilst recoving from having a lump of metal removed from my eye by a dusky medically trained maiden ( "dusky medically-trained maiden". I was in old-man heaven until she pointed a bright UV light into my face and came at me with a bundle of needles !.) I decided that it was an ideal oppertunity to knock up a few nets. I'd promised to make some as a birthday present for a friend's lad . I'd also decided that I could do with a few fairly tightly made ones for use in thick cover. Unfortunatly I found myself low on materials . Fortunatly there exists an emporium of delights that goes by the nane of Agouti Nets . An order was placed for some string and rings on Friday evening . Yesterday morning (that's pretty much a bit less than one and a half working days . ) the post-lady was at my door bearing a neat grey package containing all I required to continue production . Even though I was supposed to be on my way to a little mopping-up ferreting job in a country garden I could'nt resist taking the time to examine the goods . I was really pleased to see that the twine I'd selected was fairly fine and tightly twisted . One thing lead to another and with the kettle boiling I decided that there would be no harm in knocking -up a net before returning to work . So that's what I did .I whipped -up a tight, 34",tapered item on a short draw-cord which was dropped into the net bag with the others . I arrived at the job and allowed the dog to search for for likely looking burrows.According to the Gentleman of the house the ground moved with bunnies as if it were an extension of the Australian outback but his wife insisted that she had only seen the odd one since my last visit. Eventually I found myself following the dog in the manner of Alice trailing the White Rabbit into a rhodedendron thicket .Now, if one pill really could have made me small I'd have taken it . It would have been so much easier to make progress . As it was I was forced to clamber and crawl through a tangle of stumps and stems until the hound was truly convinced that he had the enemy pinpointed . A poet would have the loved the spot for the artistic manner in which sunlight dappled the forest floor as it danced earthbound twixt the swaying canopy. (who writes this pretentious twaddle ?). It was'nt such an artistic experience for me . The flickering rays and erratic shadows played havoc with my sore eye !. With fifteen nets down and the ferret given rein the dog and I contorted ourselves into shadowy niches and awaited events . A rabbit hit a net but the mesh snagged in the undergrowth .Luckily the dog managed to pin it down before it could wriggle free of the half-closed net . I'd just fought my way to the dog's aid and dealt with both net and rabbit when number two bunny exited. It was a fifteen to one chance but the net that it chose to become entangled in was the very one that I'd made less than a couple of hours previously. The rest of the afternoon was spend in similar fashion . The few rabbits that were present were in small burrows tucked deep in cover and required a similar Chindit style approach. I ended up with five more of the hard-won little devils and the dog came across another likely burrow that I'll tackle later in the week.
