Valuable dog stolen after owner assaulted on road

By tim healy

A dog owner has told how a gang of men pushed him into a ditch and made off with his valuable lurcher while he was out walking.

Colin Hill was exercising his pet dog, Moxy, along a rural road near his home in East Farndon, Market Harborough, when a van pulled up beside him and three men got out.

Mr Hill said the men approached him and initially asked if he would sell the dog.

"I said I was not interested and started to walk off," he said. "One of the men came after me and asked me again to sell the dog.

"I refused and he pushed me in the chest with both of his hands. I fell backwards into a deep ditch, let go of the lead and the dog ran off.

"The man stood over me and told the others to get the dog. They then loaded Moxy in the van and drove off."

Mr Hill, 41, has raised 16-month-old Moxy since he was a pup.

"I was not badly injured, just cuts and bruises," he said. "But I was shaken up by what happened and I really want my dog back. I raised him, and I miss him."

Mr Hill said Moxy would be worth about £2,000.

"He is a valuable – I'd already been offered £1,000 cash for him, but he's worth twice that much.

"Lurchers are prized by some people for use in illegal hare-coursing. I think Moxy was stolen to be sold on, either to be used for coursing or for breeding.

"He is a greyhound lurcher and his colouring is rare."

Police are investigating the robbery, which took place in Lubenham Road, near East Farndon, at 5.45pm on Monday, February 7, and appealed for people with information to come forward

He said: "We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident or saw the transit van in the area, or from anyone who may have seen the animal or is offered one for sale."

Moxy has two distinctive black V shapes on his back, about 1cm in size and 2cm apart.

He also has a split dew claw.

The main offender is white, about 50 and stocky, with short, black hair and an Irish accent.

Anyone with information should contact Northamptonshire police on 03000 111 222, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
