have been doing a wee search mk2 are the same shape as the mk3s think the mk2 searched to 20ft and the collars were black clip together ones same as the mk3s ,but the mk3 collars were grey one of the problems with the mk2 was its battery life around 30 hours but dont know of any other faults but heard they were shite have just opened up one of my mk1 boxes and on the depth wheel it has mk2

Aye thats what i was thinking yesterday the only differnces i was was aware of was one collar was black the other grey .But there where elven differnt mk1's proto types made before they made the mk2

This might help to clear some misconceptions for the younger folks who have every excuse for being confused when you consider the locator variations that are about .

 

MARK 1 The "FE models"(and the One strikes again . Look at the serial numbers on the circuit boards and you will see that there were several different Marks of "Mk1" but that's just confusing ) commonly called "Mark1" locator have a grey boxes . The collars are variously designated as 8ft models ,Micro models or 15ft models etc but all have square resin transmitters moulded around a thin leather strap with a metal battery cap.

 

MARK 3 The Mark 3 is the latest model that is available .Its likely gone through a few unpublicised internal changes since its inception but basically look for Flashing lights , Hawkwind meets Star Trek noises, Search+locate modes and a "pin-pointer" knob on the back . The early collars are wide military style , webbed watch straps with a fairly flat , clip together battery-case/transmitter in grey plastic . The newer Mk3M collars use more circular magnet activated transmitters .

MARK 2 Now for the horrid Mk2. How the Hell did Deben get the idea that this ill-concieved abomination was a worthy replacement for the well-tried Mk1 ?. Maybe a few field -testers or reviewers were on back-handers ?.

Basically it looks and sounds similar to the Mk 3 but very importantly is lacking the sensitivity knob.

The device chews batteries to bits and represents several steps back to the rubbishy monstrosities of the sixties and early seventies as far as efficency counts .

 

The transmitters(as noted by Auld Salmon and The One) are of black plastic . They tick faster than the MK 3 collars and as you might expect utterly destroy batteries.

I have a couple of Mk 2 collars (They were very cheap ok!) that see occasional use . Strangely they both tick at different rates and one kills a set of decent quality batteries in a day.

 

Mk 1 boxes will pick-up Mk1, Mk2,Mk3 and Mk3M collars .

Mk 3 boxes will pick-up Mk2,Mk3 and Mk3M collars .

 

Mk2 Reciever boxes should be put in the recycling bin to be turned into something more usefull ..such as maternity wear for Barbie Dolls .
