Recommended Posts

Here is a completely new breed to me and i would guess others on here. Kai is boarding with us for the weekend and he is a bloody big (50kg and 27") dog he doesnt like men much so i could be stuck on this computer all night if he doesnt let me out of the study  Big and athletic crossed with a greyhound they could be useful pulling rhino down

here is a bit of google bumf about the breed

The Beauceron is a French shepherd dog dating back to the 1500's, said to be developed solely in that country with no crosses to foreign breeds. Originating in the plains region surrounding Paris known as 'La Beauce'. La Beauce is generally acknowledged as the cradle of the breed. The Beauceron was used as a livestock herding and guarding dog extensively on farms in France. Most often with sheep, but were also used with cattle. Their ability to follow commands without hesitation was well utilized during both wars in Europe, where the military used them on the front lines to run messages. Beaucerons were also used to pick up trails, detect mines and support commando activity. In recent years the breed has been used as police and military dogs.

Had a look at this breed before Stroller, they are the primary breed in the make up of the Catahoulla Lepard Dog (spelling!), coming over with the French settlers to the southern states.

It was the Cat dogs I was interested in, stunning animals but vocal on quarry, though I don't know if that would apply to the Beauceron, as Cat's are made up of a few breeds including Plott hound and Blackmouth Curs if memory serves me right :hmm: .

Stunning animal in the pic and an interesting post

WR: He is a big softy but he has a bit of history his owners didnt get him until he was 18 months old and i would say some bloke has give this dog a bit of abuse as he is very wary of men. By bed time last night the big sort arse was all over me but it took a few hours of ignoring him before he came round. Had him out over the fields with our lot and he is an extremely athletic dog and by f**k he can run and run and run and run. Typical herding breed but more laid back. he is following me around the house and he let me clean his feet this morning ok. i like him, and would have one if i was into shutzhund or something like that. interesting to note its a very rare breed in this country but they only cost £400 a pup. Probably apart from their size they just look like big mongrels maybe a rottie x collie i suppose at first glance i would describe them as a type of dog rather than a breed. This dog also has double dew claws on his back legs just like a pyrenean mountain dog which points to similair genetic makeup.

The breed has no hereditary faults or propensity to various ailments chiefly i would imagine to the simple fact that the show people havent got to them yet. and long may that continue for the breeds sake

Great dogs the French Shepherd/Beauceron IMO.

I was in France a fair few years ago to sus out the breed and have a good nosey at the national 'specialty' I was seriously going to look to buy a dog to import. We had one stay here for a few months, I was seriously impressed with the breed (for other work than hunting)

Just prior and following this trip a friend brought in some nice types, and kick started the breed in this country, more than likely related to the dog posted here.

They are without doubt a very intelligent breed and hard as nails, and seem to excel at man work as well as there more natural work with livestock.

A very under rated breed for what they do in this country, but I don't see them making great lurchers, but who knows. One thing for sure they dont look 'the business' without cropped ears.

This dog was walking backwards keeping a bad guy in check, soon as he touched the handler on the shoulder he was nailed.

A Harlequin or Merle as we call it in this country
