hello all.

i have a quick question i would like help with.

i keep a few working russells.

not world beaters but they get the job done.

these are the large strong type.

the thing is my brother keeps a small staff bitch he uses for bushing

and rating around the farm.

she is not the show type. smaller and more fitter looking.

always keen for hunting.

what happened was my brother went away for the weekend and left her with me.

what he forgot to tell me was that she in full heat.

since i wasnt at home when he came round he just dropped her the yard

and my dog got to her.

the is i have never seen this cross befor.

will they be any good for hunting.

any information would be greatful.

If neither of them are worthy of breeding the go to the vets and get rid of them. Now. Matters not if the 'cross' is good or not, its whether your dog and bitch is.   Just my opinion.   FTB

Well if thats the case, then yes there are some handy crosses of this type, if the breeding is done right.

By that I mean both parents must be of decent blood and graft to a standard.

A staffy that is only used for 'bushing and ratting' will more than likely be the wrong type to use and therefor chances are you will end up with a litter of shite - like the many that have gone before it.

I have seen 2 good bull/russels working. The rest have been way off the mark for a variety of reasons.

That is my opinion, you did ask for it.

You have two choices as ftb said you could take the bitch to vets problem solved or let her have the pups and see how they go,if you have the room for them.I personally like the x seen them work for years and at the minute i have pattxbull at the end of the day its up to you or your brother what you do.

Seen two out of one litter a few years back from a jack russell bitch served by a staff dog.

Both looking like staffs, but a wee bit less bulky.

Both couldn't fit into most fox earths, but they guy used them for other hunting quarry, rats, mink, wild moggies, and other things.

Both were excellent at drawing. Now when these were mated back to jack russell bitches to produce 3/4 russell 1/4 staff pups, well I haven't seen anything like them for confirmation and prey drive ever.

Good luck.
