Recommended Posts

hey lads need your opinions and experience as some of you might have seen in my previous posts im moving to france shortly however i have a dilema my team of three lurchers one gsp and my pjrt has been reduced to just my small whippet x due to theft and two being knocked down at the same time (worst day of my life to date) needless to say the last few weeks have been horrible not only is my solitary whippet miserable with no companions i have essentially lost my whole team i had them all from either 6 or 8 weeks old and the eldest was 5 at time of theft im lost with out they however this nitemare leaves me in a position ive never been in before i prefer getting pups as then you can make a bond with them and you make them into the dog they become i dont want to buy anyones mistake

but and its a big but it leaves me with the prospect of buying several pups at the same time and rearing them all together and trying to train them all together

have anyone of you tried rearing a load of young dogs at the same time

happy hunting

It would be a 24/7 job mate with 2 or more pups. Main problem is getting them to bond with you instead of each other.

Would be easier if you have individual kennels for each pup and can work with them individually for short periods of time. Even then it's going to take up a lot of time with a short training session with each pup followed by play time & excercise (though you could excercise them together).

I've had pups 6 months apart and found it much easier to train them than 2 i had at the same time, when neither of them bonded to me as they were kept together.

If you have the time, energy and patience to devote time to the pups individually every day then it is possible. But you need to really put the work into them. I've often reared two pups at a time, but I work from home and can go and do a bit of back yard training and interaction at intervals during the day. You also need to be able to take each pup out alone several times a week so they don't just bond with each other, but bond with you and learn to obey you in the field as well. It can be done, just takes more effort on your part. I certainly wouldn't do it with more than two pups though. You know the old saying: two's company, three's a crowd. You could well find two pups ganging up against the one pup if you had three at the same time: not good for a pup's confidence and development.

personally i like at least a year between pups, enough time that the pup understands and trusts me in every situation, training a group of pups is 4 times the work, depends what you intend doing with them of course, but to get a group of pups who will only be interested in playing between themselves for their first year on the same wavelenght as the handler is a mighty task , then again it dedends what standard you expect from your mutt,,best of luck

I always keep 2 pups back, mainly to keep each other company and they get a chance to chase and play,it does take longer to train them.Because ive been short on numbers for a couple of seasons i kept 3 back this time, all went smoothly till 5 months until 1 started to be bullied,it started to go backwards in its training so i let it go,its much easier now and far less time consuming.
