whip x grey 276
Ferreted rats many, many times. Found most ferrets wont take to ratting, just come out, but then you get the special ones who likes it, they love it. Yes they can get bitten, and badly, but never lost one yet. Another thing i hear people say on these threads, but never yet ever seen, this thing about does protecting their young...never had a does protect it's young from ferret, dog or man, ever! They are more into self preservation imo. But then again i could never get away with using a smoker, found it killed more to ground than bolted. Dogs and spades cant be beaten for a good day on the rats. i agree with u some ferrets didnt like gettin bittin,,,,and didnt like going back in,,,i used to hear them gettin bitten some came out,,and ran back down like there were pissed off and mad to sort the rats out,,,lol,,,usally the older ferret were bonkers on rats,,,,,younger ones,,,they were hit or miss,,,but i find ferrets liked a good scrap,,,but gettin bitten like most animals hated it lol came out gave themselfs a good shake off and went back in ,,,but i did find later in day they did get abit sick off gettin bitten,,,but come following week they were game for it again lol and rat would bolt quicker soon as they got a whiff off a ferret at same set the following week,,,,,and the young were bolting and young inside were left to defend for themselfs Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,217
1 extra thing there is a difference between ratting land sets that are a long cover crops / release pens for keepers and doing the kind of shit you find in big pig/chicken type places - it's a f*****g nightmare and i hate rats anyways. Go down at night with the dogs if you get a chance and try cat lamping. Quote Link to post
heritage 202
For me, working the ferrets to rats isnt an option. The smoker/terrier combo will yield big days initialy but the numbers will soon dwindle....The best way to approach this contract would be to use everything you have in your armoury.I dont belive one method alone would be enough to control rats on such a large scale....id also consider shooting, trapping and snaring to be worthwhile considerations...atb Quote Link to post

That's right, whenever ratting is mentioned too many people come on saying just dig them out but usually that's because all they do is a few days around the pens and gamecrop where big numbers can be took.it's a different game altogether around buildings with calf, pig and poultry pens.I'm out a few nights a week ratting and even if I go in a barn and see a dozen rats the dogs will only take a couple before the rest feck off and after a while they get wise and it generally becomes a shooting job to gets what's left.
