I fish commercially for a living and it would be good if this national disgrace did recieve more attention. Any system that forces the discarding of dead fish will never work and is totally unsuitable

The problem is not mesh size, which have increased, or days at sea, it is the discarding of dead fish. Mesh configuration is more important than size, towing harder can constrict larger meshes ,square

That's what worries me trawler skippers are all for it, which I think will leave the quota system wide open for abuse.

In theory it's a good idea but what's going to stop boats trawling for cod when they have already caught there quota and saying it's bycatch?

youl never win with this one unless managed properly ie not landings but money put through boat , ben brought up round the fishing etc and have a boat gred is the problem at times to much hunger or bust , thtas the nature of the beast to much hi fuel etc a boat is aexpensive commodity to run even a small shelffish boat, for lobsters you have insurance , gear, deisel harbour dues ,safety courses ,mca , tax man accountants , its ahard way to make abuck at times , but good crack in the summer months

Your right end of the day its all about making money like any other business, and that's what worry's me about this big fish fight. I personally think it will be a step backwards as more fish will be landed. How are they going to police weather the extra boxes of fish landed are bycatch or illegally caught. If cods at top prices and a boat has already caught it's quota I know what I would do if I were the skipper, go trawl for cod and say it was bycatch from trawling for sole.
