i know this has been partly discussed before, btu i have just seen this topic on another site and thought i would ask on here.

would you say its better to put :::

greyhound over a small bitch

big lab over a greyhound bitch

would it make any difference which way you would do it. Obviously this would be a 1st cross so perhaps there would be a bit too much labrador in it?

What about putting perhaps a greyhound/saluki/whippet over a labrador?

opinion's please

cheers

first lurcher i ever saw when i was a young lad was a lab cross, must have been 3/4 because it could shift.

mate has a lurcher x lab from an accidental mating,15 mths old just starting to work looks like a rough coated collie 1/2 cross, hunt all day and easily quick enough for rabbits on the lamp.the lab was the dam btw.

I have seen a good few lab x,s now and i rate them highly its just being lucky to get the right one.

It depends what you want the dog to do to decide what type you want but imo start with the 1st x then put the 1st x to a lurcher of your choice to start your own line,we did this by adding the 1st x lab to saluki lurcher types and they,v done the job well.Good luck ;)

That would be 3/4 1/4 and not 4/6 2/6

okay cheers when it comes to breeding, im no good at working stuff out :D

its not breeding its maths

easiest way to work out fractions in dogs is to go back till all parents/grandparents etc...are pure,

in your example there would be 3 greyhounds and 1 lab (grandparents) then add the total number up so in this case its 4, your that say 3/4 (at grandparent stage 3 pure greys) grey and 1/4 lab (out of the 4 grandparents 1 was a lab

crossed to grey again and its 7/8grey 1/8 lab etc....(7 pure grey great grandparents and 1 lab great-grandparent)

I think that a lab cross would be as useful as a collie cross, both intelligent, labs are good hunters, and good retrieves, just try and use a lean working type lab,

dont know whether bitch or dog as the lab would be best, probably end up being a greyhound dam as i cant imagine many lab owners would want to use a lab bitch as a dam to lurchers when pure labs would sell for more

also i remember someone saying that stamina is inherited from the maternal DNA?

dont know who they inherit speed from, but either way i am sure it would do rabbits if brought on right.
