A bit of a mooch!

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody...........Well got up yesterday morning for a mooch with Ideation, well I'd been thinking about cancelling has I was ill  and really didn't feel up for it.What with all the bad weather lately and not being able to get out as often as I would've liked and the fact we had a young lad tagging along with us I sucked it up and got my s**t together.

We got out on the fields at first light on what was a crisp bright morning, the scent seemed good has the dogs were straight onto a few lines and within minutes had a mark we netted up stinker in and a rabbit in the net.Got rabbit out of net to find it had mixy :realmad: not an ideal start,on we go along the edge of this field and get another mark almost immediatley in with the ferret and another rabbit in the bag though this one also had mixy  So we carry on mooching around but with no luck........not a sniff!

Its now 2.30 and to say I'm fecked off is an understatement we had 2 rabbits within half hour of starting then nothing for hours and I'm thinking this mixi as killed the whole estate and were it not for the fact we've got the young lad with us I'd have willingly packed up for the day.So we decide to have a bash on the horse paddocks leading back to the truck and what a contrast these were.......things immediatley picked up and within minutes we had another(fat and healthy)rabbit in the bag. Both dogs were now working with real purpose I was especially impressed with Ideation's young whippet he's got a cracking nose on him and uses it well.We got to a long hedge that runs a fair way, netting up is a nightmare so we decide to just net the accesible holes and leave the rest in the hope that the dogs can pick them off as they scurry to the next set of holes.Well this plan worked and we had some good action for the last hour of the day and all the rabbits accounted for on this side of the estate were mixy free :good:

So what was mostly a bad day we ended up with 7 rabbits, not a great day by a long shot but thats life!

A few(crap)pics........

A very demoralizing day, that ended in an hours god sport. Had we done it the other way round we would probably have happily doubled the bag. As for the rest of the estate i think our efforts and then a final wave of mixi has reduced the rabbit population to barely anything so that can now be left for the rest of the season, with no complaints (other than from us!). The important thing is that the young lad (13) enjoyed himself, and is shaping up into a decent ferreter

Up until the last hour it was demoralizing in the extreme, walking whole areas of holes where we usually get plenty of marks and finding nothing. Usually we can only get through a couple of these areas (hedge rows, cover crops, woodland) before we lose the light but this time we walked all we had planned for the day and only caught two diseased bunnies and i dont think we really put many up either. At one point i was trudging along a muddy ditch staring at johnnys back with two bored dogs and a 13 year old boy and i just thought 'f**k this'. The wee horse fields saved the day at the end though  The numbers are not important but its good to have some sport at least. You were on the phone when we were doing that last hedge, i noticed johnny chatting away like an old woman :tongue2:
