I take it you have checked for a puncture or other wound? If there is no wound and whole foot is swollen then its likely a broken bone, which MUST be looked at by a vet if you want the dog to run again. Even if one toe is badly swollen it could still be a broken bone, but generalised swelling means one of two things: bacterial infection caused by thorn or other going into foot and setting up an infection, or a broken bone, or several broken bones. Don't leave anything to chance if you want the dog to heal correctly: displaced bones won't heal by themselves into the correct position. See a vet.

Get him to the vets like sky cat describes could be a foreign body slid up the nail which will need bathing and ice pack to bring swelling bone, broken bones can only be found at the vets get him booked in and rest him up. Trim the nails short as possible to keep the weight off
