a bagless day

well guys i'm not long in from a day out with johnboy19 with a young ferret terrier and the air rifles

well lets just say things were not in our favour to start off with as with the ferret being young and it being a new ferret that i havent tried untill today i wasnt expecting many rabbits from it but definatley never expected it to act the way it did the first burrow the terrier had marked after putting the rabbit from cover we proceeded to net up

waited a couple of minuts and attempted to enter the ferret attempted being the objective word well the ferret had no interest in the burrow whatsoever and constantly kept running in the opposite direction

now i can accept this as its as green as the grass in summer and decided to lift the nets and carry on

the next borrow the dog marked was a fairly big warren and the dog was all over it and the place was littered in droppings and stinking of rabbits

too many holes for the amount of nets i had out so dropped the longnet at the top and put nets down where we could

let it settle and again tried to enter the ferret same thing ran away from the holes i was entering him at so i let him run about in the hope he would drop in eventually it didnt happen

so rather than mess about anymore with the ferret i suggested putting the ferret in the car and set up a wee hide and try for some woodies and crows that were feeding next to a couple of big old trees

so ferret in the car we set off back along to where the doos were and with a couple of bits of drift wood and an old railway sleeper for a seat flung the cammo net over set out some decoys that john brought with him and sat and waited

and waited and with a few crows and a couple of maggies flying over none had landed for us to have a shot at

after a while the sky started turning grey so we decided to pack up and head back

just before getting to where the car was parked there is a small wood where the maggies roost and there was quite a few to go at but after a couple of shots being deflected from twigs and branches and a couple of straight misses most from me but we had about 20 minutes at them and then it was too dark to carry on so we called it a day

nothing in the bag but i had a good day out with good company

good lad is johnboy19 and although we were beaten today is more than welcome out again

thats true it was a change to see some grass under the feet

like i say its first time out so really wasnt expecting anything from him

but will do all the usualls with him take him out it all comes with experiences but i get the feeling he just hasnt got it i know you cant really tell from the first time out and i will keep at him

i've had a few ferrets over the years and had young skulk run through but not bolt come out a hole and start jumping about with daft carry on but never had one that ran away from holes lol it just dont seem to have it in him

time will tell plenty time left for a few more times out to get used to things

i know what you mean when you say you think the ferret doesnt have it in him. years ago i had a hob like this it acting the prick for a few months it came good eventually. i went out for a full season with a mate with a silver jill useless second season it came round and didnt look back become a good little worker dont write him off too soon time and patience some take to it straight away some need time. all the best for the new year.

when you put him to ground put him arms length down the hole and keep your arm in till it goes . if it doesnt go use the same procedure at the other holes until it does. with some ferrets early doors it may take a bit of time but dont give in too early .give him a season before writing him off. i have only been to scotland a few times and i am 46 but you certainly live in the right part of the country for some good sport.

Its no every ferret that makes the grade and i admire a lot of folk that spend time trying to get them going but sometimes its best to just say this ones a no go and it would help us if we where a bit more ruthless
