what is an acre

obviously an acre is a term used to describe the size of a piece of land . but what is an acre in square metres ie is it say 100m by 100m and an acre being an old term (now hectres) was an acre measured in yards and a hectre measured in metres . ( yes i am bored )

thankyou both will check out site and big brothers already killed me im afraid

edited to say if going from above an acre would work out as roughly 63.5 by 63.5 metres is this right cheers

right...

22yards, is a chain.

10 chain, is a furlong

8 furlong, is a mile.

an acre is a chain wide, and a furlong long

so thats 22 yard by 220 yard. or 4880 square yards.

and theres 640 of em in a square mile.

now, anyone for bushels?
