hunter951 0
When I take my 2 year old whippet dog for exercise in the first 100 yds he has 3 shits with a hard stool, then as he runs about he does 2 or 3 more but they are very runny is this normal for a whippet or am I feeding wrong. His diet at the moment is Chappie complete dog food Plus I give him some raw meet also some chicken scraps from the table. All advise welcome.

skycat 6,174
That should not be normal, but sadly it is for many dogs fed on cheap, cereal filled complete foods. Dogs fed on raw meat and bone diets don't shit anywhere near as much and it isn't runny either. Cereals are not a natural food for dogs, and although hordes of dogs live happily for years on these kinds of foods it does put more strain on the digestive system and often causes runny shits. The mucous stuff is often when the mucous lining of the intestines increases, sometimes because the lining of the gut is irritated by what the dog is being fed on. Google BARF diet if you want to find out more about feeding a more natural diet.
