Ferret Andy 1
Hi All ... Some of you may have read my previous thread in this section and will know that not to long ago i aquired a small JRT bitch by the name of 'Milly'. Basically i'v been trying to get her sound with the ferrets and see how keen she is. I take her for a good run through the wood's and fields on my permission with the .410 most days, and she's getting pretty sound with the shotgun now which is good. Basically on Saturday i took her for a run through the woods where she is always picking up the scent and scratching around rabbit holes, but this was the first time she actually self entered. She's about 8 mounths now and only 8 ish inches to her shoulders. At first i was bricking it incase she got stuck as she had no collar on and i had no spade with me, but she exited a different hole about 30 seconds later. She did this about 3 or 4 times. I was quite chuffed about this, so, now i knew she could get in and out i took her back to the same place today, to try and build up her confidence. Today was slightly different though. She entered and didnt exit. After about 4 or 5 mins, i started to get panicy as again she didnt have a collar on I get down on all fours and sart calling her at the hole she went down. I start hearing her growling and 10 seconds later something runs past the hole followed by the dog (the hole went left and right) I could just see the tip of Millys tale so earing on the side of caution, i pulled her from the hole to find she had a mouthfull of rabbit fur. Again i was chuffed by this as i never thought i could use her for rabbiting. My question is, where do i go from here? She seem's quite happy and willing to go down the holes and wrestle with the rabbits, but im worried about it all happening to fast and ruining what could be a usefull dog. All help and ideas appreciated. Cheer's, Andy. Quote Link to post

Ferret Andy 1
Thanks for the quick reply! Why is this? Indeed i do have ferrets and do go ferreting. To be honest i sore this as a good thing, but am new to terriers as i have only ever had spaniels before her... Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
What exactly are you wanting from the dog? To bolt rabbits? To mark holes? To catch rabbits? Ive never used a terrier for rabbiting, as IMO it is a no no. If you want it to mark holes keep it on a lead and let it see rabbits bolting into nets etc and it will soon get the hang of it. The other two options are retarded. Its all fun and games sticking your pet down a hole til you lift a turf and the thing has suffocated in a tight spot. If you want my advice, keep the russel as a pet and get a lurcher. FTB Quote Link to post

Why is using a terrier for rabbiting a 'no no' and why would a terrier marking holes or catching rabbits be 'retarded'. Are you trying to suggest that russels dont make decent rabbiting dogs? Ferret Andy 1
Again, thanks for the reply. To be honest im not sure what i want from the dog. As i said im new to terriers. When i first got her, i sore her as a dog that could mark holes when out with the ferrets and do a spot of ratting in the farmers feed barns. Are terriers just not used for rabbiting of this kind then? I appologise for my lack of expierience when it comes to dogs of this nature and what could be silly questions Quote Link to post

I appologise for my lack of expierience when it comes to dogs of this nature and what could be silly questions PLenty of terriers are used for rabbiting. Like the man said i wouldnt go sending her down holes especially without a collar, after rabbits as its just gonna end in a pain in the ass. Stop her going down and get her in sight/smell of some rabbits and she will soon get the idea. Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
I'm sure someone will come along and tell you more about it than I will be able to. Im sure pleanty of people use terriers for marking holes, your problem being your dog can fit to ground on them and will be a pain in the c**t. FTB Quote Link to post

Ferret Andy 1
Again lad's, sorry for my lack of know how, but could some one please explain why her going to ground is a bad thing? I understand the fact she could get stuck in there and dont worry a collar is now on order incase that does happen. But is't just the fact that this is the first one shes gone down and i think its because its the first she has ben able to get in easily. The others she cant, and dosn't try to. Just sniffs around them. I understand to some these may be 'stupid' questions, but the way i see it is you learn by watching, doing, and asking questions. Can a terrier really not be used to bolt rabbits in the same way a ferret does, asuming it can fit? Quote Link to post
genuine 81
IMO The answer to your last question is "NO". You have dogs for jobs and bolting rabbits isnt realy one of them. By all means use the terrier to mark rabbits and bush them, but if your going to consider using terrier for bigger game like fox i would keep away from rabbits full stop! So basically mark rabbits and use your ferrets, you can tell you realy care for the dog so be careful around rabbit holes, the dog could easily suffocate! Rory4 267
As you already got ferrets, use them for bolting the rabbits, no dogs can safely bolt rabbits from warren. get yourself some nets and use your dog for marking the warrens, bushing and pinning the rabbits in the nets. need get your dog 100% trust worthy with ferrets. you dont want your dog trying to get in warren your about to ferret. a bloke i started ferreting with got a little jrt was good marker and was great at catching rabbits as soon as they bolted. huntingryan 33
i had my jrt for just over 2 years and use her for rabbiting and a bit of ratting like all the over guys sed dont let your dog go to ground when rabbiting i use my dog to mark the set and pin the rabbit down this is a must have in my opinion if 2 rabbits bolt at the same time u can rely on your dog to hold the other one while u get there but a bit of advice take ur time there are very stubborn dogs and would prefer to hunting on there own e Quote Link to post
