robbobsam 0
ok just got me fac threw for 177/22 rifles ,just after some advice on what gun to get will be shooting mainly rabbits and foxes. thanks If you want a mega accurate shooting tool for rabbits and hares you cannot go wrong with a CZ 452. They are mega accurate (1/2" groups @ 50YDS)are dirt cheap and will do a great job for you. If you want to shoot foxes and deer later on get a .243 and the Tikka T3 is an absolutely awesome tool. Mine groups 1" groups at 200yds with homeloads. Don't believe all the hype about the .17hmr, I had one and sold it after using it for 3 months. The slightest bit of wind and its all over the shop. I use the .243 tikka now for long range rabbits till I get the .20cal. Edited December 12, 2010 by robbobsam Quote Link to post
GRAM71 29
22lr all the way fella, i have a 20 yr old anschutz that still clover leafs at 100m, 17hmr is a different ball game, as many people dislike as like the calibre, i used to have no end of grief with mine, probably down to improper cleaning, they are a copper jacketed round and need to be treated the same as a centrefire, use a good bore cleaner and leave over night if possible, this will help lift copper residue from the bore and make it easy to clean, the worst thing you can do to a rifle barrel is scrub it with the brush within an inch of its life. Funny thing about the 17hmr, it's less prone to windage over the same range than a 22lr. Just a thought, on your ticket, does it say 22lr or 22rf? if it's the latter have you considered the 22WMR? far superior to both the previous calibers. By the way, 1/2" groups at 50 yds is NOT "mega accurate" Edited December 12, 2010 by GRAM71 Quote Link to post

Dont let you FEO hear you are doing it as Im sure that rabbits are not down on your .243 slot and he will have it off you. Edited December 12, 2010 by davobob Quote Link to post

My .243 slot says "for deer AND ANY OTHER LAWFUL QUARRY" so rabbits are definitely on the list. Of course I'd probably not use it for them, due to the £1 a round cost, but legally it's fine. What's wrong with using a .243 for rabbits anyway, as long as the normal safety rules are observed? Quote Link to post
lurch46 2
thanks for info so far people was going for 177 but now thinking 22 Quote Link to post
Colster 1
If you can get both then fine but for one gun, I'd always have .22 over .17 My LR does all the HMR can do and it does it quieter and cheaper, the only advantage to the HMR is range and it isn't really that difficult to get to 60-80yards of a rabbit. The HMR does shoot flatter than LR but if you've come from an air-rifle the LR will seem flatter than you're used to anyway. Quote Link to post
lurch46 2
its does say 22rf on paper so which rifle best then in cablier 22rf [wmr]. Quote Link to post
RicW 67
More to the point, your ticket must specify the purpose for which you need the calibre. Does it say "Fox" or just something like "vermin" or "small ground game"? If it does not specify fox you could be in deep s**t for using either on Charley. Most folk on here reckon that HMR is minimum for fox except the odd time if one pops up under the muzzle. Home Office advice to FEOs ia that no rimfire should be granted "for the purpose of shooting fox". Quote Link to post
matt_hooks 188
I notice you keep putting .177. Is the FAC for an air rifle? If not then the calibre is .17, not .177! If you have your FAC already, then you will have specified the calibre that you want, and given the FEO sufficient reason to hold it. Mine all say "and any other legal quarry" so I quite happily take foxes out to 40 yards with the .22LR, as long as I can make a good head shot of it. Quote Link to post
