Ferreting with an air rifle

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago I took two of my jills out to have a go at a friend of my dads place, where I found a good hedgerow teeming with fresh earth's. Started well with about 4 out of the first set. I walked on to the next and found an area of maybe 20 metres long down this hedgerow where there must have been over 50 burrows!!! well armed with about 20 purse nets I decided not to bother so I set up my 25 yard long net and quietly put the jills to ground and silently stood behind some cover. After about a minute I saw a bunny poke his head out of a burrow had a good look around before hoping out and sitting there cleaning itself!!! this happened about 6 or 7 times there were bunny's just hoping out and sitting above ground, I'm guessing because they hadn't heard any disturbance they felt no need to bolt??? I could have probably done 10 with an air rifle within 20 minutes!!!!. then two bolted and hit the net and they all went back to ground!

Anyone ever work silently like this without nets?

I have done it before,i have a small quarry with lots of holes,i just put in a single hob and let hin have a wonder round, the rabbits would either just pop up outside the holes and sit or run fifteen yards or so and sit outside another hole.I had a good bag in an hour or so no trouble. You just have to make sure you get real clean kills so they dont kick below ground, apart from that it can be good.I think it suits bigger warrens where they will hole hop rather than just bolt to another warren, but i may be wrong.

Do as you did, put the long net up around the whole warren then put the 20 purse nets out as well. Distrubute then evenly around the the warren just at random. The idea being that if they dont come out of a netted hole they will hopefully go down one and get backnetted.
