gnasher16 31,415
I certainly dont mean any disrespect to the bull, but imho the only reason he was able to spend any length of time in a ring with Ray Robinson was because he was teak hard and had a freakish chin. Tommy Hearns sure could bang, but was always a bit fragile when on the receiving end. Benn, great crowd pleaser, but no plan B. The Lamotta/Robinson fights are historic all time great fights....Turpins first fight with Robinson was one of those freak results alongside Tyson/Douglas....most people said Turpin wouldnt see the 4th round !....It could be said Robinson took him lightly as the rematch proved. Hearns was possibly the most exciting fighter of his era, mainly due to the fact he had no punch resistance as he went up through the weights. Do you think Benn was disadvantaged by his lack of size? He always looked smaller than his best opponents.

Yea, am i right in saying Robinson was at the end of a european tour where he'd had summat daft like 20 fights in as many weeks ? Any way he was a class act.

Any way he was a class act. Few people would dispute Robinson was the greatest middleweight of all time, can you imagine a fighter of that magnitude in todays times fighting over 200 fights !...today a 40 fight pro career is seen as a long career......Robinson fought Jake Lamotta 6 times in all out wars !! Thats right Robinson had fought in France,Germany etc before Turpin beat him in London.....That fight was massive for England,it was just after the war years and morale was low,Turpin became an instant national hero......unfortunately his death in 66 went pretty much unnoticed due to England winning the world cup which was sad, especially the way he died.....Turpin would have destroyed fighters like Benn/Eubank ...his life story is a sad tale but for pure boxing ability he was the best Britain ever had at middleweight in my opinion
