Tyla 3,179
There were 9 inches of snow this morning so work wasnt an option. No good for the lurchers either so i thought i'd take one of my infrequent outings with the shotgun, i took my .410 simply because its just had a sling put on it and i've not had it out for ages. Ollie the terrier came too, hes really a bushing dog but can turn his hand to rough shooting too when he gets the chance. I dressed for the weather, it was freezing, and took some food and a gamebag just in case lol. We walked to the farm and arrived just gone 7am, plenty of fox tracks round the yard, in fact, they were all over the farm. We'll have to get onto that at some point. I left the gunslip in the barn and remembered the fore sight was missing on the gun - not ideal. Got my first shot as we were leaving the buildings, a magpie that had been feeding with the cattle. Missed that over the top. The Cooey is full choke and you almost have to shoot it like rifle, as you'll see i need a bit of practice. I didnt have a set plan, just thought i'd check the two ponds for ducks and walk the hedges in hope of pigeons or a chance at a pheasant. Had i been any good i'd have had a good mixed bag, suffice to say i missed a teal, umpteen pigeons and a hen pheasant. I pricked a cock bird and marked where it landed, a couple of fields away, we made our way over there and Ollie took the line tracked it down and flushed it only for me to miss it again. He was not impresssed! It was really tough going for both of us, the snow had drifted knee high in places and it didnt stop snowing all morning. The pigeons were sitting tight in the low hedges or feeding on the hawthorn. I found a good spot to ambush them as they flew in to feed and managed to hit one but Ollie was starting to freeze, he'd been in and out of the ditches since we started, so we couldnt stay still for too long. It was a great morning, a tiny bag, one pigeon for the best part of a box of shells , but very good sport and absolutely beautiful surroundings. I think i would have done better will the 12 bore but its just inspired me to practice with the .410. Ollie did well too, better than me thats for sure!
