depending on your police force ,some are more leanient than others ,im from north yorkshire and appiled for my firearms and got my .17 and 243 on open ticket ,

my friends told me to word my permission correctly ie went something on the lines of this ,to carry out vermin control and to control deer on land that i have permission and land that i will gain lawfully through other land owners consent

this gives you that extra bit as when you get extra permission when your ticket comes through ,as most land permission comes after you get your ticket through as people find out that you do a good job and they have found out you have a rifle

As above it's not a time thing but down to the discretion of the licensing officer, they need to be satisfied you warrant having one, a good reason would be for example you keep getting more permission and keep requesting land checks from the FAO.
