Springer pup (8mnth old)

Recommended Posts

Hi, just a quick question i have the above and every time he gets a scent hes off like a shot and nothing stops him. Eventully he comes back to the recall but thats after 2 or 3 trys. I keep hering people say that dogs go through there teenage years and just wondering if thats whats going on and how to rectify it. Thanks.

Hi mate you say "on the recall" by that i assume you mean whistle?

If i were you i would forget the whistle until you've got the obedience spot on just with voice commands. I would start the dog quartering in front at no more than 15yds MAX and use a 15yd check lead to keep control.

Obedience is key, stop, stay, sit, come back. Shouldn't matter what's going on around the dog i.e rabbits bolting, pheasants flushing etc the dog should be completely concentrating on your commands, only after that would i introduce a whistle. Your dog is only 8 months, still very young. I know a keeper that wont even begin training spaniels until they're a year old. Just my opinion of course.

Good luck.

Why are you taking a dog that is 8 month old on scent?

Start getting the dog to quater for you and get 6 tennis balls throw one at a time three foot to the side of you.

The idea is to have the dog working close to you and finding things around your feet and not on the otherside of the field or woods.
