I wouldn't worry about us scaling down our surface fleet, have you seen the kit on board some of our newer ships? The new type 45 destroyer is the most powerful ship in the world of it's class, it's got 6 times as much firepower as the class it replaced:

..and the new JSF fleet on order will more than make up for the loss of a few ageing squadrons of harriers & tornado's, especially when combined with the new carriers.
