Ferreting first day out

Recommended Posts

Starting ferreting early this year, I will be having my first day out tomorrow on some new permission, there are loads to go at so expecting a good day. The Hunt was on there today so the hounds may have scared them to ground for a while so hope its a good day. I will report back with my results.

My mates finding it hard around sheffield area, there has been an outbreak of mixy again and thinned them out dramatically. Fingers crossed it doesnt reach here again, having said that my mate shot a couple nearby with signs of it. Guess they have had a few thrown around and about by certain folks, sooner us ferret them than they die such a horrible death.

Hoping for a good day out but there is still plenty of scrub about, I normally don't bother untill after end of november giving it time to die back.

I am hoping to do a dvd at sometime this winter, should be good for the novices to learn a thing or two or the experienced to pick spots off or at least have a scream.

By the way take a look at the new police cars around here...........................

Well it was a hard day to start the season off. Firstly we had a couple who wanted to come and watch to see how its done, that slowed us down tremendously explaining the whys and whats etc. The cover was really thick much worse than we anticipated and we had the occasional dig. Digs are not too bad but we were ferreting on some huge piles of topsoil that had been stored by the quarry for some time and the holes were very deep. At one point we had Ray by the ankles while he was making out to be a chillean miner well underground.

(almost back out)

Its all in the game though and we dont mind but it does tend to slow matters a bit.

We hit a large bank that is usually covered with rabbits all the time, I expected to get at least 30 off it in about an hour or so. The dog marked a few holes but not what I expected and we soon found out why...

As we put a ferret into one hole its tail flared up and we knew something was not right, shortly after a stoat abruptly flew out of another hole, this must have worked the warrens just before we got there and bolted them all. There have been a few sightings of mink too so that was on our minds.

We then moved on to a small wood where the warrens were old and very large, these took some time up and even then we managed a few snagged nets and the odd runaway, I managed to pop a couple with the shotty though.

As we got to the end of the wood we had run out of time, we dont spend too long as the lads have over 50 miles to drive back home. After gutting and having a bite to eat we counted a measley 21 rabbits, and 2 woodies that flew a bit too close. Not good by our standards but never the less an enjoyable day out. We will probably do some easier sets next time, we had to miss these today as the tractors were ploughing the fields where they were.

seen them new police trators on country file the other week, see if they get used for the right reasons. i was talking about that super dairy at college the other day and i heard that its not going through now because of the protests from locals with concerns of the impact it will have on the environment and so on??? good luck with the ferreting.
