Hi all,

Quick legal question if I may.

Been offered a good Anschutz rifle complete with mod and scope for little money, trouble is I didn't put in for a mod on my ticket.

If I take the mod off is it legal for me to own it (as long as I don't use it) whilst I apply for a variation?

Cheers,

Mick.

I think once the mod is on someone's ticket it needs to stay on someone's ticket or store it at a RFD. Could be the sort of thing your FEO can sort out qucksharp, I was told they pretty much cant refuse a moderator for health and safety reasons.

The simple answer is no. The moderator will be classed (although it's a ridiculous bit of UK legislation) as a firearm. It would be the the same as your mate selling you a .22rf and giving you a .223 until you have a variation. In essence your mate could not even sell it to you. However, your mate/shop could hold it for you (you could pay him in full)and you could apply for a variation, once obtained you could go and pick it up.

If the moderator is for a 22lr and he holds this on his FAC,he cannot sell it unless he sells to someone who holds a 22 moderator slot on there FAC, however if its not on his FAC you can have it and keep it until you get your FEO to sort it out for you, although if you were to use it with the rifle then you are commiting an offence.

You can buy a moderator for an air rifle and it will fit onto a 22lr they are both the same.

If its on his ticket just get him to keep hold of it until you get a variation for it, costs around £20 for the variation i think

A variation which increases the number of firearms on the ticket is £26. As a mod is classed as a firearm (loony imho, but them's the rules) I think you'll have to pay the £26, but it's worth asking the FEO!
