need a quick fit detachable lamp for 2 rifles

Recommended Posts

just been up the fields with the lurchers ,one not too well kennel cough i think by the replies off here, anyway thought i would take them out for a quick spin ,loads of bambi s about odd hare and to my suprise fox cubs , last 3 years the vixen has either been killed or lack of bunnies has moved her on to cut a long story short my lurchers are not fox dogs but if i had my rifle and A LAMP i could of bagged both of the buggers , so, i have a .17hmr and a .243 so i need a good strong powerful light to sit on my scopes but needs to be easy changeable to the other rifle ,

i have a battery pack for lurchers set up so a light weight lamp is a must now

bloddy gutted really 1st cub sat watching me as though it was a statue and 2 nd ran to me so fast a could of shot it with my shot gun ,i should nt have called it in really but i could not resist as ive not sqeaked one in since my old lurcher poppped its cloggs,

any tips of make and model please of a lightweight powerful easy changeable scope fixing lamp

dont want much do i

thanks for your time

Hi Lee,

I use a laserlite LA 4 for both lurcher work, and scope mounted on top of my 243. The handle quickly detaches by removing 2 screws, and fixing the scope mounting kit.

I used to use it on my 22 also (I have NV on that now), I simply bought a second scope mount for a few quid, and left one attached to each scope. The mounts don't interfere with daytime shooting at all. With this lamp Foxes are shootable to well over 200 yards.

i was thinking about that kenny as my lamping kit for dogs is one of those ,i just thought it was a bit weighty with both rifles around 10 pounds already,slinging/sweeping them about for 2 /3 hrs might take its toll

my lamping is mainly walking whats yours

ps where abouts you from ? im 10 mile from whitby?

I've tried others but personally I find this one best for me, the shootalite is lighter and smaller but doesn't give enough range for foxing with the 243, and the more powerful lamps are bigger and heavier.

The majority of my lamping is walking, and I carry the rifle and lamp slung on my shoulder, and spot using a yukon ranger, only switching to the lamp when I'm ready to shoot, which makes things less tiring on the arms when out for a few hours. I also spot this way if I'm out for any length of time at night with the 22, even though it's a lot lighter than the 243, constantly raising and lowering it does take it's toll after a while.

I'm only about 10 miles from Whitby too.

what model is the yukon nv mate and at what distance can you see the mammals you shot

It's the ranger pro that I spot with, and depending on the background you can spot foxes out to at least 300 yards, though against some backgrounds it's a lot less, but I still find it better than constantly using the lamp, and it's great for lampshy animals.

They're good for rabbits too, but again the quality varies with the background but if you look through the ranger you regularly see rabbits that you can't pick out when you put the lamp on. Probably the biggest fault I find is that one of the places I shoot on is just a couple of miles from a big town and when you're scanning fields in that direction it's harder to pick things out because of the ambient light in the sky, but when you turn and face the darker areas it's fine. I don't get this problem with the conventional NV scope.

Regarding price, to be honest the much cheaper digital ranger model isn't that much different in terms of detection range, and with hindsight I'd probably get that one instead, and save some cash!

just got a snap on mount for the la4 kenny tried it on the .17 and ok it fitted the scope without impeding the sights, unlike the 243 i could not fit it as my scopes were set different as the scope rail is diff, on most ,so having slid the front mount forward off i went to re zero,i bore sighted the rifle and had a go setting them up 1st @50 yrds and got the bullets in the inch marker then tried at 100 yrd and it was pulling in fast and i forgot my cleaning kit. a tiny move forward on your scope mounts puts it way out ,out to morra to finish it off properly all been well with the weather

i hate setting the scopes up this time of year as 2 days are not the same (wind and weather wise)but it needs doing

I know what you mean about the zeroing, it can be a right pain!

The mount I use is the older type, not the snap on one, and when I first fitted it I had to shorten it slightly by cutiing a slice off the front with a hacksaw cos it was catching on the front mount. It takes a bit longer to attach the lamp but it's still reasonably quick and simple.

Let us know how you get on with it.

went out with 243 to set up the sights @100 yrd i got it to hit the inch dot 3 times in a row one to left one to right and one to above right but all within the inch

the wind was up a bit so i was happy with it hitting the spot

i know these rifles and scopes are very accurate but how much play do you give the grouping of your bullets to be satisfied its ok to shoot 100 ,200,and 250 yrds

100 yrds within the inch 3 times would you be happy with that even though it was in 3 different places (weather was nt the best )

Link to post

Considering the conditions weren't ideal I'd be happy at that, and check at different ranges as soon as I could. It's not often that we're out after quarry when there's no wind anyway, and that grouping should give you a clean kill on a fox even out to a fair range, and I'm sure you'll be posting some positive results soon

I have a Lightforce 170 striker i think is the model name.... I could be wrong- anyway the one with the 170mm lens size, I really like it, super powerful beam with the filter off, slap on a red filter and it cuts the beam down quite considerably, but right on the money if you like me tend to do a lot of faffing about before the shot.... I really should work on that...., pretty light weight, the only thing is that the reflector has a textured back and you've got to be careful that your zips and poppers don't touch the back of the reflector or the makr quite a racket, so that needs sorting, probably with some cloth tape over the back or something, but if you stick the battery in a rucksack, it's fine, yes it does get a bit heavy after a while, as you have to hold it out from your body to stop yourself from nudging the lamp off line and having to realign it, I think that may just be because I haven't got it quite tightened down enough, but I'd recommend the lightforce definately....., for this lamp, you can buy extra mountin brackets, the brackets stay on the scope, and the lamp just slides on and off, see here
