joh 77
Got out alone today for the first time in a while, due to having hand surgeries.... wanted to give the young dogs some time. Token , who's only schooled a couple times after a dig is done, entered a den only 20ft from the truck- her first solo time out. She engaged and bolted the hog within 20 seconds, straight to charlie. Further into the field she entered again and Rocks wanted in also. I tied her back and let the young bitch go about her business. She was in for a while and came out, looking for another way. she settled on the first hole and went back in. Barking followed. Then she showed :-/. She hurried to the other hole and entered again. Soon she was barking and battling again. A quick locate with the orto found her only a couple feet down so a quick dig through the sandpit and i was to her- Face to face with a good sized hog and giving as good as she was getting. I pulled her and let this one go. On to the next part of the farm i decided to leave the other dogs in the truck. She was doing well and I didn't need all the distractions. I wasn't too bothered if a hog or two got away anyway, and she just wanted to keep hunting. The next hole she got to and entered was another occupied den. She was showing well and not wasting time entering un-used earths. Soon enough she was on again and lighting up with the cries of war. A quick dig found her with her hog, that quickly bolted through the dig hole and dropped into abother den hole. : Though she followed, after I gave a quick check of her face, she didn't find this pig again. Backfill happens quick in this part of nj, and she has never experienced it before. I gave him best and we backfilled and moved on. The last earth she worked was a 3 holer. She entered, bayed, and came out..I was like "WTF?" but she went in again and came out again, looking for another way. Un-interested in the other holes she went back to the first, and stayed, whining and scratching. I sunk the 2 foot to her to find her digging at backfill. I helped her along and she pushed through, and was quickly engaging another hog. A second hole was sunk to find her hard at work, giving a good account of herself. This hog had taken a bit so I helped him out and finished him. Ok. so not the best account of herself- a couple mis-fires and a bit unsure of the backfill, but for her first time out solo she did awesome. Four pieces of game accounted with her solo,no time wasting at empty earths, a lesson in the sharp end, a lesson on backfill and what to do with it, and a bitch that stays when the hog brings it. All in all I am well happy today. Quote Link to post

skycat 6,174
I've heard that those 'hamsters' can back fill pretty fast: reckon she did well for a first time out. Thanks for posting that account: love to hear of dogs working different sorts of quarry in other countries. Quote Link to post
