Mastiff 7
Hi all, Can anybody explain the pros and cons (if any) between the above types of shotgun? Thanks very much, Mick. Quote Link to post
Sidelock 10
Boxlock v sideplate, they are the same thing, the side plates are there to make the gun look like a sideLOCK, the sideplates make no difference to the action or its strength, they do however make the gun look nice and let the makers jack up the price. The SIDELOCK is a different ball game, sometimes called a "hammerless" or "internal hammer" gun, the sidelocks of yesteryear were very much stronger then the boxlocks of this era and had the advantage of being much easier to strip and clean/repair. However the sidelock was much harder to build and so was to remain the ear mark of " A Best English". With modern methods the strength point has infact now gone and a modern boxlock is just as good as a sidelock but still very much cheaper to make and buy. Nothing more pleasing than an "English Sidelock" Well maybe a pair Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,936
Aye There were a trio of nice early Belgian boxlocks in the Countrymans Weekly today. One of them was from around 1910 and after a discusion with the vendor I have bought it for 50 quid. Will make a nice wee s/s for bird days to save me turning up with my camo semi ! With a sling on it will be a handy wee tool on ferreting days as well. ATB Quote Link to post

danebrewer10 6
as Sidelock said, a sideplated gun is just that, a boxlock with side plates which are only there for decoration, the other thing with sidelock guns is that they are supposed to have better trigger pulls than boxlocks, though when you're actually shooting I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference..... so in answer to the question- nothing appreciable in terms of performance, just the price and how purdy she looks!
