Experienced trappers...

Recommended Posts

We have very kindly been leant a collarum trap to help catch the stray lurcher we have been following for a while now.

I have no experience of traps or setting them.

Are there any experienced trappers that are in the wigan area to please lend their knowledge and experience please.

I have not used them against Dogs, but as per my other post if she is a tall dog and gets her feet close to the bait and then reaches down the loop may not go over her head and catch her properly, without seeing the dog and situation it is difficult to advise. If you do a couple of dry fires with the trap you can assess the way it throws and tightens the noose, think about how the dog would be positioned compared to a fox for which the trap is designed and make an adjustment as you think is needed. If it is a tall dog I would raise the trap on a mound or side of a hedge bank.

Difficult to explain too, Good luck

Have a look at this http://www.collarum.com/parts.htm from the retailers in the US they do have different models for various Canids. It will help you gauge loop size you need.

i believe these collarums are designed to catch both coyotes and fox the only difference being the snare itself, unless the ones for the uk are different

THE EASIEST WAY TO CATCH THIS DOG IS GET IT USED TO FEEDING FROM ONE SPOT A TIN OF DOG FOOD OR SUCH LIKE ..... THEN SIMPLY ADD SOME SLEEPING TABLETS ....

AND WAIT ....

SEEN IT DONE A FEW TIMES BEFORE ....... LAST ONE ........ A WAYWARD SALUKI ON A SCOTCH GROUSE MOOR

If only it was that easy

The dog is feeding from one spot regulary,

but and hears the big but, it is dence woodland - verry dence

you can not get through it, the area is large and unless you had a heat seeker

then once shes gone and bedded down, youve no chance of finding her,

shes moved from were she used to bed down,

unless its a fast acting one an she dosent fight it, then maby it would be possable

but most are slow acting and she could be gone with in seconds.

Ive been up today - walked all round and no sign of her, mostly shes eating at night/early morning

sometimes she does come out and sun bathe on the bank, like she did yesterday

but its verry rare now, unfortunaly we can not be there 24/7,

and if she only takes the tab at night, then weve not a cat in hells chance of finding her.

FEED ON THE MORNING ........ LEAVE HER THE DAY BEFORE WITH JUST A SMALL AMOUNT

IF SHE DOESNT TAKE THE FOOD WHILE YOU ARE WATCHING , REMOVE IT .... TRY THE NEXT DAY

ASK YER VET FOR A STRONG SEDATIVE THAT CAN BE GIVEN ORALLY .....

JUST WATCH WITH A PAIR OF BINOCULARS

TAKE A DOG WITH YOU ..... WHEN SHE GOES DOWN IT WILL FIND HER

The throw arms and cable loop are bigger on Coyote/Lge dog models, but with our fox model if the loopis increased and the setting is right it should work, possible problems if she is very bully with a broad head? but this could be overcome with a little bodging ingenuity.
