undisputed 1,664
Decided to venture out tonight given there was a good wind blowing. Headed of to a local spot that usually holds a few. Well got there and things got of to a bad start when I pulled out the cigarette fitting only to find the casing was missing. No prob I usually carry a spare in the glove compartment, quick check and I'm sorted. Next I plug in the lamp only to discover the main beam's not working. No prob says I as I usually have a spare lamp in the back. Then it dawns on me that the spare lamp needs rewired and it still hasn't been done from last year. You know that sinking feeling you get when things aren't going your way...anyways nothing to lose now so plug it in and low and behold it's working So down to business. First field completely empty not one rabbit. Next field I see a couple far side of the field but they're all ready moving.... Not good.....f*****g summer lampers. Walked on a bit further and I catch a glimpse of ruby red eyes far enough out for a slip. Wind was in my favour as I slowly edged along the treeline. Got to about 5feet and slipped the dog. Well normally the dogs out the traps like a grew after a hare but not tonight, she's decided to go into stalking mode, normally this doesn't bother me but tonight ain't the night to be trying my patience. After a few steps I followed on behind the dog and a swift dint on her ass with my boot and she gets the idea and bursts into life. Couple of quick turns and she nails it just before the fenceline. Never got close enough to anything else so moved a couple of mile down the road. While I'm driving it occurs to me that I meant to do something but couldn't remember what. Anyway arrived at my new destination and as I open the hatch I remember what it was I forgot....don't leave the rabbit in the back with the dog...oops! Opened the hatch just in time to see the the last of it disappear down a very happy dogs throat. Decided to struggle on and see what happens. Hit into a lone bunny sitting further out than was wise so headed toward it slilently praying it would clamp. Luck was on my side for a change as ol bugs continued to munch on his supper. Just before slipping the rabbit suddenly sits up as if he knows somethings afoot..slip the dog and they're off. Pretty straight forward catch this time as the bunny decided to run further into the field making it a forgone conclusion full stomach or not. Quick snatch then back to hand...nicely done. Wee bit further on another rabbit sitting way out so tried the long slip this time and came up trumphs rabbit lifted straight from it's seat and straight back. Couple of more runs after that but she never came close. So after 2hrs and 3 rabbits we headed back to the truck for home. Bit of rewiring and an order for a couple of bulbs on my to do list. Not the best night but good to get back out again...things can only get better..I'd better add a couple of worming tabs to my list as well Quote Link to post

I just expect things to go smoothly and they rarely do. The mrs has been tidying the truck through the summer and had bundled all my lamping gear into a bag. I think she's dropped the bag or my lamp and broke the bulb. I was lucky with the other lamp as it was fading in and out. As I said the stalking thing doesn't bother me that much the dog's learned over the years that in very tight fields the rabbits are never more than 20yrds from the fence line and tries to get up as close as she can to give herself a decent chance.
