Picture of pup with f****d legs?

Recommended Posts

Tragic to see pups like this. One of the reasons I no longer feed high protein high fat complete super puppy foods, not that I've ever fed them exclusively even very long ago. IMO a balanced raw diet is quite sufficient for pups. People tend to think that a raw diet is very high in protein, but when you consider that meat, tripe, chicken and rabbit carcases contain quite a lot of water the protein content is automatically far less than a dry food which contains very little water.

I've never used calcium supplements either. IMO dogs grow more slowly on a raw diet than they do on a high powered puppy complete food, but their bones are denser, stronger and everything grows naturally.

Of course a diet of meat alone is also bad: knew someone who reared a litter of pups on ox heart and tongue and virtually nothing else: 3 of the pups broke their legs whilst running at about 16 months old. When the third one did it they had them tested and it turned out there was virtually no calcium in their systems.

One extreme is as bad as the other. Balance is everything.

This is a really big heavy dog and he's been reared on a raw balanced diet since we got him: I think that his condition says it all.

this is not silverpaws Saluki, it is a reascue whippet I think that grew up fine with straight legs.

I don't know if "ricketts" is actually what the pups had?

The ones I dealt with pretty much looked like they had broken their pasterns, and walked like they had flippers instead of feet. truly awful to see!
