was told off a vet once, if your dog is not lookin/actin right a simple test, put a bit off pressure on the gums for a couple of seconds, if the gum colour returns reddy/pink from the white your pressure has created then no imediate danger but if it stays whitish the dog needs a vet like NOW, this is just a bit off advice i was told, happened with a mates terrier and when i done it and told him he laughed at first, but bit of persuasion he went to vets but was too late unfortunatly , he buried the bitch a day later , this doesnt cover all injuries internal i dont think but the more we know to help are dogs the better, my motto if in doudt the vet gets a shout.

This may help you a bit more, as there are other things to look out for when checking the gums aswell,

like capillary refill time and what colour the gums are, for eg if there brick red or realy dark red, then it could indercate

heat stroke, yellow is jaundice, also if the gum feels tacky or dry, then it could inderacte the dogs dehydrated.
