Got my new shotty today / but i need some advice please

Recommended Posts

Hi all :D

After trying to decide on which semi auto to add to my gun cabinet , i decided on the Winchester sx3 31/2'' composite and purchased it today on my standard shotgun certificate.

However , when i got home i found an article on the web stating that :

Though you might think both are shotguns (class 11) I must point out that the 3½” model will be classed as a Section 1 firearm since you can easily load the magazine with more than two rounds if you use the short 2” shells. Ignorance of the law; be it as a dealer or shooter is no excuse; you have been warned!

I am now confused and worried that i am in possession of an illegal firearm although i have read a few uk forum posts that this composite 31/2'' version can be legally purchased on the standard shotty certificate.

So any advice will be greatly appreciated ,

Here are a couple of pics of my new shooty and the article mentioned ,

Mines a Beretta A400 3 1/2" chamber and "probably" could take three 2 1/2" shells.

Its only illegal if you load three in the magazine.

Any 3 1/2" chambered gun with a tube mag has the potential to be illegal.

Chill out and enjoy the gun, Just as a word of warning Gamebore clear pigeon will defo fit 3 in your mag so probably better to avoid that particular cartridge

Do you mean that you could probably load MORE than 3 shells into the magazine.

I am new to semi autos but thought that 3 shells are the norm to load into a semi auto on a standard uk shotgun cert ,

Yes, if a semi or a pump has a 3 1/2" chamber the magazine is designed to hold two 3 1/2" cartridges so there for will accept three 2 1/2" shells plus one in the chamber.

IF YOU DO THIS ITS CLASSED AS A SECTION 1 FIREARM,

If you use it as intended (like i use mine) as a sec 2 its legal.

I don't understand how "if you use it how it's intended" then it's fine, ie, only putting 2 carts in the magazine, but surely if there's space for more then it's a sect firearm? It'd be like buying an 8 shot SA, but then saying, oh it's OK, i'll only be putting 2 carts in the mag.... Silly comparison maybe but something I can't get my head round..... the only thing is, what can a 31/2 chambered gun do that a 3" can't in normal shooting situations?
