Squirrel bait

Recommended Posts

On my parents 8 acres smallholding are two sets of hazels trees in two places and two Walnut trees all of which are nutting or fruiting.

Mr squirrel(s) is taking the hazel nuts and Walnuts from one tree as the other fruits later.

I have a live capture wire trap that I set on the floor under the hazels and baited with peanuts on a thread and I also strapped the trap on one of the Walnut branches again baited with the peanuts, but no success so far. And the squirrel has been on the Walnuts since setting the trap.

The local council pestie use Kania and peanuts mixed with Sunpat Extra crunchy as this is the smelliest according to him. I don't have a Kania.

I have a FAC air rifle but it is easier to set a trap and leave it.

Would sweet corn be better than peanuts as the squirrel has the pick of fresh Walnuts and Hazelnuts?

It's always a problem when there is an abundant natural food resource to cage trap squirrels.......there is simply so much food around. Tunnel traps on the ground........a Kania.....or if it is safe to do so.........take them from the feeding trees with an air-rifle....i have been doing just that this week and have taken them from the hazel trees as they sit there feeding on the nuts............A nice stationary head shot works every time.

Thanks Steve and UFCL. Steve has hit the nail on the head, or squirrel at least.

I had been selling the carcases for 50p each until I saw the Budgens selling them for £3 and a butchers in Somerset for £3 as well.

I cooked one and not the tastiest but very nutritious.

i can get 50p for the tail alone, not sure what the gamedealers are offering but ive a restaurant that will take them skinned should i want to go through the bother..

i thought the meat was good eating, however,it is ALOT better cold and simply roasted in tinfoil with butter and herbs like trout.
