When the ground been hard+warm, it will draw there feet anyway. Leave of for 2 weeks, start in august as above, then in sep nice+easy lamping. With this dog never did alot of road work, did it in the feild Quote Link to post
skycat 6,174
Too much too soon: the pads need several weeks to harden off. Bathing them in salt water every day will help: racehorses which live near the sea are galloped on the beach: do the same if you live near the sea. Make sure there's plenty of animal fat in her diet, and adequate protein preferably from a fresh meat source. Quote Link to post

Surgical spirits are good to harden up pads ,but too many miles, too soon , wears them thin, before they get a chance to toughen up. Friars Balsam is also a good treatment for sore feet ,but messy if the dog is kept inside. I used to start Sonny, my old dog, on 2 miles at a slow pace ,gradually building up to 6 miles fairly quickish,so it's completed in around 50 min, he also got an hour and a half daily, free running in fields. Obviously the more stay in your dog ,the less crucial long distances are, but I found 6 miles a day ,about 5 days a week coupled with galloping in fields enough . Mine don't get roadwork now ,but I might try Rainer, my youngest ,with the bike this season. Edited July 16, 2010 by inan Quote Link to post
