Castrated Dogs

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if dogs that have been castrated will work any differently to dogs that are intact. My pup is coming up 10 month and can be a right pain and just wont back down if you try and tell it off. Some people say he will grow out of it and hes just a pup but others say to get him castrated and say it "works wonders". Not somethin i want to do apart from a last resort but just wonders if it would have any negative effects.

had my old dog castrated years ago as it supposedly calms them down but it didnt change him at all. maybe it was just my dog but genuinly made no positive difference. he did hold a lot more weight though which wasnt good. just put a lot of time into your dog, make sure it is excersized plenty, be firm and fair and most importantly do not allow any other members of the family to "undermine" your authority.

I have a castrated whippet and it has not affected his working ability or prey drive a jot.

He was castrated at 18 months because he wasn't coping very well with my bitch being in season. He stopped eating, lost too much weight, howled all day and night. I listened too much to someone telling me castration was the answer.

I regret doing it for other reasons, mainly that he is tormented by every entire male he meets.

I would never have a dog castrated for the reasons you state. I think some medical necesssity is now the only reason for me to consider doing it again.

He is a soft touch about the house, however, he works well, always gives 100% and never fails to impress.

getting a dog castrated doesnt affect the working ability but you dont wanna get it done because he isn't behavin or if there to horny doesn't work you have gotta get him done when he is how you want him to be it keeps them where it is whatever state they are in i had a whippet bull who the previous owners had castrated thinkin that it would stop the dog from being like that but i have never known a dog like it all it wanted to do was mate it would just stand there going for it in thin air what a pain that dog was

you got to be boss, and you are not. :wallbash: Get the fecker on a long rope, give it its training on rope. When it wont come to you,or what ever it does , just say (no)1st, then yank the fecker with the rope. When he knows what you say goes, or you can hurt+shock him he will soon back down fact. All young dog are differnt, some you need to be harder on than others. i would only castrate for medical reasons.??

Thanks for all the replies and if im honest they were the ones i was looking for. Realy didnt want to get him done but the better half was convinced it would make the "perfect" dog overnight, or so she had been told.

As for the long rope i did try but he kept getting it wrapped around his legs and running 100mph to the end. using an extendable lead at the minute which is 8m long. Seems to be gettin better.

Do you think 8m is long enough and how good should i expect his recall to be at 10 month? should he be coming back as soon as a shout or will all puppies ignore you now and again?

Sorry for all the questions just feel like im working at it constantly and not getting very far.

Some will be more headstrong and/or less attentive than others. I've had a pup that would recall perectly from she was walking and I just had to build and develop on that.

I currently have a dog who used to just stand and stare at me, barking defiantly when called.

With him it took time, patience and gentle coaxing. He is now by far my best dog, although he is still a headstrong bugger sometimes.

Some will say otherwise, and each to their own, but I think it takes as long as it takes. I train my dogs to quite a reasonable level of obedience and I never loose my head or run out of patience. When they aren't training well, or I don't feel right, I just stop.

Really, it can take years to get the best from a dog. It doesn't happen like Caeser Milan in real life. I have seen me work on recall (the hardest basic in the book IMO) for months turning into years to get it spot on. Every small step forward must be recognised as a step in the right direction.

Be careful with that rope or long lead. It's gentle encouragement that is required otherwise you'll just make the dog scared and it'll do nothing for you. Leadership is not just about complete dominance, the dog must enjoy it's experiences with you without you wavering from what you require.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for that, he does seem to get better, some days even perfect then another day he just completely ignores me, or when i shout runs 100mph to me but then straight past and keeps running back and forwards which is probably the most frustrating of all.

Also he still keeps biting hands when hes playin, hes defo playin as he wags his tail but cant seem to stop him, if i shout he barks and thinks its all part of the game and any movement makes him think im playing back and makes his bite harder. I try putting him out in the kennel for 10 mins which does calm him down but doesnt stop him doin it again. Any ideas as iv got a few young nieces and cant have him playin like that with them.

Thanks again, this is my first dog and want to do the best i can with him.

Don't interact with him when he degenerates into play biting. Stop the game dead in it's tracks, don't say anything, turn your back on him and walk away, he'll soon get the message that it is unacceptable to play with humans using his teeth. Have the kids do the same, but always under supervision.

If he keeps wanting to play,, use that to help with the recall , if everytime he comes to you , play with him for a while,,, sounds like a high energy dog, you can put it to use, take a look online on how service dogs are trained, most of them work just to play , it makes high drive dogs very motivated to learn,,

I had the same problems I found if he jumps up tread on his back feet he will soon stop not stamp just enough to make him yelp as for recall just crouch down and call him if doesn't work walk off keeping an eye on him and sit down once he comes to you take him to first place you called and scruff him to floor and use your call once or twice make him stand then praise him but if he still don't come to you wait till he is calm catch him put lead on him pull him so close to your leg he will try to pull away and walk for about 20mins with him trying not to get trod on after a week he will be better at understanding you good luck oh and make fuss of him as much as poss IMO
