if a pup is taking squirrels

Recommended Posts

just a question from reading on another thread, the guys dog taking a squirrel, now iv had dogs retrieve them to me,and the dog has still been caught with a bite to either its lips or ears for that matter and as we know them ear tears bleed for england,ok no problem for an experienced dog to take them ,but feck me a squirrel can give one hell of a bite, would you actively encourage a young dog to take them or not,for me its a no as i think it could lead to a bone cruncher, maybe after its been on the bunnies for a while,i mean they are not stupid and soon learn the difference between their prey, this guys dog from reading was being walked by his missus so it was a mistake that can and will happen so not knocking him, before all hell breaks loose lol,im just asking

was my dog that did this, and this is a good question looking forward to the replies, me personally will let him chase squirrels mainly as where I live in surrey we are over run with them and to not let him chase would mean him kept on the lead the whole time. when iam in my other house in wales we have none so its only at weekends he gets to chase them.

The big council owned wood near me is absoulutly crawling with them and its not unusual to count upwards of sixty in an hours walk around a squirrel was the first thing my beddy hybred nailed and imho it has made her hard mouthed. Some dogs learn to differenciate between some thing thats going to bite them but imho i would try my hardest to keep pups intended for catching just rabbits away from squirrels.atb dell

i try to start a pup on rabbits simply because they dont bite back and there's less chance of any surprise or wont trigger any thing in the pups mind in mouthing live fur for the first time, first experiences for your pup are sometimes make or break, either would you start him on rats for the same reason, all your pup needs to learn to do is catch and retrieve and for it to be an enjoyable experience, thats just my theory on it,,

Hi watchman.First time it happened to me was about twenty years ago.Had a one year old pup bringing rabbits back live to hand no bother. Was out one day and the dog came running up to me sat down with a live squirrel in it.s gob.I was just about to say drop it when it grab a hold of the dogs snout. The dog shock it off .the squirrel tryed to leg it but the dog picked it up again.this went on for about four times before i managed to put my foot on it and put a pellet in it,s head. The dogs nose was in a bit of a mess. This happened about four times before she learned killed them instantly. And if she missed one she would mark the tree by sitting down under it looking up till i came along with the rifle But she never killed a rabbit all ways retrieved it live to hand day or night.atb. Catcher.
