Guest Frank
Next spring, ill be more then likely getting a working whippet bitch for ferreting. If i get one that is KC registerd, will it be a bad worker, or, is their KC registerd whippets out their that are excellent workers? What lines would you recomend if they are KC reg? I am new to whippets, kept only lurchers in the past, but have heard good things about them as ferreting dogs. Any one with hand on experience with KC and non KC whippets for ferreting purposes, need only reply, im not in a mood for silly remarks and coumputer hunting buffs, giving their so called experiences. Thanks, Frank. Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
i've had one, don't know what line but definite pure bred, got one season out of him before a shitty bit of luck ended it. picked it up very quickly always marked true, caught bolters retrieved to hand was quiet and a joy to have around the house.made 20ins a real nice dog,not a vast amount of exprience with them i know but if i was going to be srictly ferreting then i would have no qualms about getting another. jamesy 0
hello , great ferreting dogs, i had a non kc from mike brown, and the be truefull it was no good, ie took a long time to catch on what it was meant to be doing and a nightmare to retreve to hand, so i gave it to a friend of mine he had it for a long time and he tried with it to, it was ok hunter but not very good..maybe a one off......... my misses fell in love with the breed so she was thinking of getting an other whippet to show and for lure coursing, so she went out and bought a kc reg blue and white from a local women i went with her and picked one.. it was the misses dog so all i use to do was walk it, when i use to walk it i use to watch it run and chase things, and i thought that dogs got something about it, so i took it lamping ( without the misses knowing ) its was about 11 months old first time out 4 chases 2 rabbits great dog, so i worked on the retreve and it was a great dog.. only thing is me and the misses split up and she got the dog.. anyway am not saying mike browns dogs are crap. but i would go for a good working kc line, because you will pay £200 for a non kc, so you might as well go for a working kc line for £275 cheers Quote Link to post
dai dog 11
hi frank, ive got a little whippet bitch, 18.5", lovely temperament, good little lamper,( lacks a gear on open land), great ferreting, hunts up, flushes, catches. not a rock solid marker, but ive learnt how to read her. good around nets, if a rabbit purses, she will stand off if im there, & hold it if im not! very handy if the net is a bit away from you! & its like having two people there, she will watch some & ill watch the others. shes sooty sam lines if this helps! e g walsh states in his book, lurchers & longdogs that "the only advantage small lurchers have over a whippet is a rougher coat to withstand bad weather". and in my oppinion its a common misconception that the whippet is frail & injures easily, ive run her on all types of land & never had a problem! all the best rhys. (ps. she only retrieves when she wants to) Quote Link to post

Guest The Big Fish
Frank, what makes you think that you need a pedigree whippet for rabbiting? Personaly i wouldnt have thought that they could stand up to too much hard work without getting smashed up. Have you not considered a whippety type lurcher? Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Hi Big fish. I want to get a general braod veiw of all whippets, registerd and none registerd, as if i end up getting a KC one, i want it to work, as thats what i want it for. Does not matter to me if its registerd or not, but i might not have a choice between the 2, when the time comes for buying. A lurcher is also on my mind but, as theirs so many litters out their of unkown crosses, i would prefer to get a pup of well known breeding, which is not easy, if you dont know the right folks. Frank. Quote Link to post
Guest The Big Fish
I understand what you are saying Frank and i'm not clued up on the subject of running dogs, but i'm pretty sure that others would agree with me, the whippets just aint up to the job if your running them regularly. They are fast as you like, but just not built for the hard terrain where rabbits tend to inhabit. Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Thats fine Big Fish. But i seem to be getting different info from folks who have kept them as ferreting dogs. Thanks and your comment has been noted. Frank. Quote Link to post
