Guest hairysausagefingers
Hi, Being pretty new to this I'm not sure what to buy in terms of net-making twine. I bought a load of 4oz Bisley purse nets, but I can't say I'm impressed with them, and I think they'll end up as spares. They are too thin and tangle too easily (Yes - I know that's the general idea ) I've made about four or five decent sized nets out of some sort of waxed twine that came out of my wife's uncle's cellar when we cleared his house. It's about as thick as household string, but I'm almost at the end of the spool now. The nets work really well by the way. Colour is a bit odd mind, a sort of dull orange. Bunnies don't care though. I'm not going to use 4oz nylon, but I'm not sure how much thicker the 6oz is? Is it any better to handle? I see you can get 10oz too - that sounds much better. Any recommendations? OR I can try some hemp, which means I won't have to double knot everything :ok: Before everyone tells me to go and buy some nets off ebay, and that it makes no sense making them when you can buy them for the same cost - this is something I actually enjoy doing, I just don't know what material to go for. PS found some blinding rings for my nets in Wilco. They are black plastic curtain rings about an inch and three quarters in diameter and they are dead tough. Not exactly traditional but 99p for 10 is ok. You have to twist off the small ring that holds the curtain hook before you can use them. Pliers are best - like I said, they are pretty tough. I'd be grateful for any net making tips that you want to pass on. Cheers Quote Link to post
Guest james b
NEVER MIND f*****g ABOUT KNITTING WITH 4z 6Z ect USE SPUN NYLON OR HEMP ONLY HAS TO BE SINGLE KNOTTED AND MAKES FAR SUPERIOR NETS Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
I've always made my nets out of hemp and they really are a piece of piss to do and you don't need to have dexterous hands to do it. I always make sure the end is anchored to something heavy so that i can get nice tight knots... when finished i just stretch the finished net and soak it in warm water then dry it. Quote Link to post

Never made nylon nets as i always thought the knots would slip ... never tried mind you so probable my own ignorance I have a couple of shop bought nylon nets as back up if doing a large bury but they are a right b*****d for picking up anything and tangling up Either way... nothing more satisfying than trapping with something made and set with your own hands Quote Link to post

Guest hairysausagefingers
Some good advice rolling in here lads, cheers. I'm going to look really stupid now because I don't have a clue what spun nylon is. How thick is it and what does it look like compared to the 4oz things I've got? I can't tell off the photo - More shortsighted than my ferrets I like the idea of the knots tightening on the hemp when you wash and dry it. Quote Link to post

Guest hairysausagefingers
What, a bit thicker then? I'm having trouble visualizing it. Maybe I should just order some. Quote Link to post

Spun Nylon comes in two varieties..... spun nylon is made up of loosely fibres .i.e. its an end use of fibres that is spun together the breaking strain of the twine is suspect( not a continiouse fibre).... Staple spun nylon is made of a continuose fibere which guarentees strenght and suppleness..... TORAY STAPLE SPUN NYLON in my opinion is the best twine on the market......EXCUSE THE SPELLING LADS.....REGARDS. Quote Link to post

maty j 6
these reduns are spun nylon and my favourite nets. i use these whenever possible. dont tangle that easily and dont rot like hemp if your lazy like me and leave them in your bag there a bit stiffer than the white spun nets ive got so i find them easyer setting. plus being red you shouldnt leave any behind. these are the white ones. good thick twine perhaps a bit too thick for me. tangle on twigs and that abit too easily unlike the reduns and not as easy to set either. last the hemp. good nets. dont tangle, good stiff twine easy to set but will rot if left wet so i keep a few of these as back up incase theres a few too many holes for the amout of spun nets ive got. theres a lot of different types of spun nylon about some good some not so good, so i would look for some in the shows etc so you can feel the quality and what its like. i would start making hemp nets first to get the feel and figure it out then move onto spun etc. i allso double knot all my nets, perhaps you dont need to but 1 more knot doesnt take up much extra time. just my 2p worth maty.
