cunninghamb 2
Hello all, I recently got into flyfishing last month and have been hooked since, caught my biggest so far last week, 5.5Ib rainbow To say I was chuffed was an under statement! Anyway... I'm wanting to go fishing for pike, where my family stay theres a reservoir where someone released Pike and aperntly theres nothing else in it barr pike and no-one bothers fishing there anymore. I have my sea fishing stuff, like my rod, reel and all that sort of stuff... I need some advice and tips like what technique to use and what sort of lures should I use? Should I use my wire traces? Just thats sort of silly stuff. Also this might be a right stupid quistion! Can I use my fly fishing stuff to catch pike? Like on the fly? Sorry if none of this makes sense lol. Thanks very much in advance. All The Best - A total newby! Quote Link to post
mudd dog 128
work away with what you think would trick the pike into thinking it's a real bait fish, yes you'd need trace wire mate. if you don't get much luck on lures have a go at deadbaiting with some roach or mack tails etc... good luck neway....mudd dog Quote Link to post
ratattack 111
I would suggest you find someone who knows how to handle pike, you are new to it and a good sized pike will probably scare the shit out of you on the bank! I had a nice double figure fish at the weekend and it thrashed around and was a mare to unhook. You will need a carp rod/heavy spinning rod, min 15lb line if mono, a landing net, unhooking mat, needlenose pliers, forceps, lures/bait, wire traces, treble hooks etc before you even think of fishing for them. Any fool can catch a pike but it takes care and patience to unhook an angry pike. The gill rakers will cut you to shreds if you don't handle them properly, not to mention the teeth. Catching a trout is very different to pike fishing. Fly tackle must be beefed up for pike, trout gear is no use for piking. Quote Link to post
poacher3161 1,766
Go to a decent tackle shop and see if they have the fox guide to modern pike fishing it promotes their gear but is a good step by step guide on most things you will want to know about pike fishing Quote Link to post

Thanks for the speedy reply's lads. I've got a good reel that I bought a while back, was 60 odd quid so it's pretty decent IMHO. I've got wire traces and line rangeing from 5pound - 50pound, got a boat rod which I can do decent casts with so I recon this will suffice, got the pliers and net aswell. So pretty much there? Can I fish pike by just spinning? But with the above gear that I mentioned? Or do I use a decent lure (could someone please recomend?) and have a float further up the line and do it that way? Or just cast out with my lure and just do a slow retrive and/or jigging? Thanks very much lads!!! You should be sorted with that lot but in that fox pike book it tells you how to make your own traces and snap tackles and if you are fishing with braid on a rocky bottom it easily frays and snaps more so than nylon Quote Link to post

For a beginner, i surgest you strike almost straight off, as the bobbin goes down, As a newcomer will struggle like mad to unhook a deep hooked pike... Quote Link to post
gerron 13
you can have some good fun on the fly outfit mate, small jacks will take ordinary trout lures with damsels and cats whiskers ect being verry effective, if using these type of flies then an ordinary 7-9 weight fly rod will be suffice, i use both traditional andmethods and fly fish for pike too,if your not at the other end of the country i would be happy to show you the ropes,pm me with some details and we'll have a day out Quote Link to post
