put a small piece of wood accross the withers and measure to it with a tape measure

Ive seen lads measure the level of back, which isnt right.

Stand the dog next to a wall/fence etc and lay a pen across the top of it's shoulders and mark the wall.

Then measure the height of the mark, easier than trying to measure the dog which usually moves about.
