Beginner to fly fishing

Recommended Posts

I've been reading on this forum and others and have a question, if you guys & girls don't mind, I'd really appreciate it :D

I've figured out a basic rod / reel / line setup...

Rod: Shakespeare Odyssey 9ft Fly Rod #6/7

Reel: Shakespeare Mustang Fly Reel 6-7

Line: Talon Floating Fly Line & Loops - Weight Forward - 7

What advice could you guys offer with regards to Leader / Tippet?

Am I right in saying the line is knotted to the leader, which in turn is knotted to the tippet, which is knotted to the fly? Is this necessary?

I appreciate any help anyone can offer, thank you :notworthy:

are you sure you have figured out the rod and line thing?

for trout,grayling and pike.

then you can use the same gear for trout and grayling but not pike.

a 9-10ft 9-10 weight rod for pike.

a 7-10ft 3-6 weight for grayling and trout in rivers depending on the size of river ie how far you will need to cast with ease.

lines then a weight forward floating, intermidiate and sinking line for each weight rod.i.e. if you have a 6 weight rod then you need 6 weight line in floating intermidiate e.t.c. and with a pike rod say a 10 weight then you need 10 weight line in all of the above.

for river fishing depending on depth and river current speed then you can get different sinking tip to go on your floating and intermidiate line.

am i confuzing you yet lol.

for lake fishing and sea trout fishing the a 10-11 ft 7 weight is preferred.

even though i do prefer using a 5 weight for dry fly fishing and an 8 weight for buzzer and wet fly fishin.

ps.when wet fly fishing always use an intermidiate line.

for lines and leaders then i always use flora carbon tippet for every type of fly fishing.you can use tapered leaders for dry fly if you like.

i dont use leaders but i know a few that does using a short 2-3ft setion and the say it helps turn the cast over but i never found that the case.at the end of the fly line you have your loop and i just tie my 10ft tippet to my first fly and then 5 ft between the second and third fly.

hope this helps

pps.for a rod id go for a vision or sceira rod if you dont have to much to spend.

prob get one of the above for £100

Boysie, what type of fish ar eyour targetting? If its trout in a reservoir then that kit should be ample. You now gotta learn to cast it! :victory:

Brown / rainbow trout, grayling, & coarse fish. But generally on reservoirs, lakes, ponds, and then maybe river. The river around here have quite alot of bank so, in all fairness, I'm going to have to be casting out quite far anyway.

Cheers supersam, makes perfect sense what you've said, given me alot to think about

Hi Boysie. Congrats on taking up fly fishing. I agree that the set-up you've picked will work well for starters. Though seven weight is kind of large. If your not going to use manufactured leaders, remember to use descending tippit sizes. ie, 3x,4x,5x. Also remember the rule of fours for matching your fly's to your tippit size. So, a Size 16 fly would need a 4x tippit. If you use a size 14, you'll have to look at the water and wind etc. to decide if you want to go 3x or 4x. This will all make sense when you think about it.

Weight forward line does make a big difference for casting dry fly's. But, if your going to be learning how to cast on a lawn somewhere. You might try a double taperd line. This has a taper at both ends and the belly is in the exact middle. So, when your line gets beat up practicing. You can just take it off and reverse it and you'll have a fresh line at the important end.thumbs.gif

One other thought. You didn't list backing on your reel. You'll want that for you bigger fish.

Tight lines.
