Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Had an invite to stalk a piece of ground that i know well .My host asked me to stalk over a patch of scrub on a hanging that lead up to fields of mowing grass which i could take in if time allowed. Hes seen a decent buck here and like a real gentleman he wanted to put me on it .The orders were to shoot any yearlings seen as well because the place is crawling with them now. Very hot evening with hardly a breath of air .Up on the top of a banking i spied a muntie but orders are orders and i watched it pick daintily through the scrub before diasappearing in some nettles .A doe came through towards me looking over her shoulder and i expected a buck any moment but time went by and no show so i moved on . I peered over the brow into the mowing grass and couldnt believe my luck as there were four deer out 2 does one with a tiny kid at foot and one yearling doe with a young buck ,possibly twins . The other deer was a decent buck .I should of photographed the scene as they were only 60 or so meters out . I was content to watch the scene for a while as id no desire to spook the tiny kid with a possible seperation .Well ,it was one of those moments only accosiated with deer when the world with all its troubles was just a figment of the imagination and when this was all that mattered ,the deer ,the birds and me . Time pushed on as it does and the does fed away towards the other fields taking the young buck with them and leaving the nice six to browse the lush grass . I waited til the three were gone and was just about to drop the six when his head went up and he stared at the far hedge line intently .I too stared through the bins and could see another yearling buck strutting across towards us apparently unaware of the older lad .He was sky lined for a good while but i decide to do the decent thing and take the yearling instead when the chance arose. On he came with the foolish mission that looked certain to end in trouble .The older buck never took his gaze off him and he was now below the sky line and only about 100 yds out .The six did something ive never seen, only heard and barked once which seemed to come from well within as he arched slightly as it came out .Perfect and enough to stop the yearling who broad sided nicely .Took him and watched the six depart to follow the does earlier . Having bagged a beast i wandered back down the valley to join my mate who judging by the silence hadnt any luck .Caught sight of charlie as i came into a field and as this is a shoot i hd no hesitation in getting on the pod and dropping it ,a barron vixen luckily .
