Permission please!!!

Recommended Posts

I am going to go around the local area and try to get some permission this week but dont really know which way to approach it so just looking for some advice and what you guys did to get yours.

I was considering just knocking on farmers doors but dont know if this is the done thing, should I send a letter first then follow up with a visit? if so how should it be worded? do all farmers see rabbits as pests or just farms that grow crops? should i mention rabbits/rats/pigeons ect or just say "vermin" as ive said before in other post Im new to all this so any info is greatly appreciated. thanks in advance

Hi tepper. I started off sending out some letters, as I didnt have the balls to go knocking on doors. I thought going up to a stranger asking if you could walk around their land with a gun was a bit of an awkward question to ask. Then yesterday I bit the bullet and went door knocking with a friend. I just knocked and said "sorry to bother you, but i have been doing a bit of airgun sooting and ferreting for a couple of local landowners and wondered if you would have any pests you would like removed". The first one took my details for her husband, and sent me in the direction of some people she knew had a rabbit problem, and I ended up with another 3 permissions.

I was surprised at how welcoming the people were, I think you just have to be polite and hope for the best.

Nice one John :clapper:

I have had no response to letters (yet)

But I got my 1st verbal just by being in the right place at the right time and having a natter to a bloke in a field.

My 1st written permission came in response to an email I sent to the church, took a good few months though to get any reply from them, then it was a quick call, 5 minute meet, documents signed and I now hunt were wabbits in the grave yard

Oh forgot to mention,

Get yourself some airgun liability insurance, cheap enough mines 18£ish, via BASA.

Make a bit (but not too much) of a deal about pointing out that you are covered against accidents and damage, but you are a safe and competant marksman and you dont foresee any reason why you will ever need to call on it

Thats a good point phantom made,,,I think getting yourself covered by insurance is the done deal as a lot of land owners will see you Are a compitant person and ive also found that if you go knocking on landowners doors a shirt & tie work wonders, Jeans & a kevin and perry t shirt donot get you permission mate, Hope it helps atb, Steve :drink:

cheers fellas, will give it a go this week and let you know how it goes. Just a quick one on the insurance, is it a one of payment or is it £18 per month or yearly?

nice 1

One payment per year

And if you buy airgun world or airgunner magazine, you get free entry to the monthly comps instead of paying.

I would always say that a quick knock on the door, looking smart and polite, and being able to show you are knowledgable and responsible (having insurance helps with this) works far more often than the impersonal email or letter. Always ask them to show you around the land and point out any problem areas, a farmers knowledge of his ground could save you many hours of wasted hunting time, and it shows that you take it seriously and are not a waster.

I'm working on getting a few permissions for rimfire and .243 rifle, those are difficult to get, but if you can show a mature, responsible approach and reassure them that you are safe then it gets a lot easier. Same with the air rifles!
