1888andybhoy 7
Hi lads, I am putting in for my FAC and need some advice as to caliber. Im 17 years old and have been shooting with a mate for foxes and deer have been using .22-250 and .243 What would be my best option for foxes and deer. Im in Scotland and know i can use both calibers for roe deer and foxes. What is plod more likely to accept as a first rifle for a 17 year old ? Also what caliber is cheaper to run ? Andrew. langouroux 14
i wouldnt have though that your age has anything to do with what caliber you wil get granted to be honest. i have a 6.5x55 great for both, with 140g soft point ammo the .243 can be a wee bit small on big reds in my opinion. f.a.c.sam 1
You're probably best going for a 243 imo. If you get into reloading, you to work up a light load for mr fox and something a bit heavier for deer. The shorter barrel life on the 22-250 is something which sometimes puts people off, because of the velocity of the bullet. Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
Who knows what you can get, both if you put the right case, neither if you don't..... I would have to suggest the .243 is more versatile as I'm sure you have found if you have been using them! Quote Link to post
jamie g 17
i cant see you having a problem you got reason to apply then that is the start. you have allready said you go shooting with a friend. im sure he can put your case forward when you get a visit from the flo. even if you have to have mentoring on it for a wee bit thats no hardship. as for barrel wear on 22/250 it will be good for 1000's of rounds if looked after. left to cool after some many shots. cleaned properly. a 243 shotoing light bullets fast will have the same wear if not more ! as it uses more powder. as for caliber i dont shoot the bigger deer so cant comment on that. i like the look of the 25/06 fires light bullets of around 70 grains very fast and flat. and can also fire heavier bullets then a 243 Edited May 8, 2010 by jamie g Quote Link to post
